ESU names four Distinguished Alumni at Homecoming

Herb B. Kuhn, Donna Clopton, Dr. Karen Kelly, and Victor Spinski

Emporia State University's 2007 Distinguished Alumni are (left to right): Herb B. Kuhn, Springfield, Va.; Donna Clopton, Amarillo, Texas; Dr. Karen Kelly, Prairie Village, Kan.; and Victor Spinski, Newark, Del.

Four alumni of Emporia State University were honored over the Homecoming weekend as the 2007 class of Distinguished Alumni, and they’re in special company – just 200 alumni have been honored as such since the award’s inception in 1960.

This year’s four recipients are Donna Clopton, Amarillo, Texas; Dr. Karen Kelly, Prairie Village, Kan.; Herb B. Kuhn, Springfield, Va.; and Victor Spinski, Newark, Del. The Distinguished Alumni award is the highest honor bestowed on alumni of ESU.

All four had fond memories of their time at ESU.

“One of my favorite memories is working on the newspaper,” said Clopton. “I loved being in the heat of all the excitement, being able to write stories and see them in print.”

“I think the friendliness and camaraderie of the students (made ESU) such a positive experience,” said Kelly.

Kuhn agreed. “It was a cultural feel. It was a sense of family and the sense of belonging that you had in a place like this.”

Said Spinski, “I fell in love with education. This school had such nice diversity. The science was good, the arts were good.”
