Expert on race and racism to speak at ESU
Tim Wise, an anti-racist writer and activist, is giving an informative and enlightening talk on the Emporia State University campus, Wednesday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Visser Hall Room 330. Wise will speak on “Beyond Diversity - How race and racism affect our daily lives.”
Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and activists in the U.S., and has been called "One of the most brilliant, articulate and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation," by best-selling author and professor Michael Eric Dyson, of the University of Pennsylvania.
“This is a program for ESU students, staff, P/K-12, university educators, and community members interested in fighting racism. Tim is an awesome speaker and I encourage everyone to attend,” said Dr. Cynthia Sequin, associate professor and Teachers College Multicultural Specialist.
He has spoken in 48 states, and on over 400 college campuses, including Harvard, Stanford, and the Law Schools at Yale and Columbia. Wise has provided anti-racism training to teachers nationwide, and has conducted trainings with physicians and medical industry professionals on how to combat racial inequities in health care. He has also trained corporate, government, military and law enforcement officials on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions, and has served as a consultant for plaintiff's attorneys in federal discrimination cases in New York and Washington State.
Wise received the 2001 British Diversity Award for best feature essay on race issues, and is a featured columnist with the ZNet Commentary program: a web service that disseminates essays by prominent progressive educators. His writings are taught at hundreds of colleges and have appeared in dozens of popular, professional and scholarly journals. Wise serves as Race and Ethnicity Editor for LIP magazine, and he has been a featured guest on hundreds of radio and television programs, worldwide.
