Educators Learn to Use Colors to Enhance Literacy Skills
Nearly 20 Kansas teachers recently attended workshops using color to help their students improve their basic literacy skills.
The workshops, called “RAINBOWing Readiness,” “RAINBOWing I,” and “RAINBOWing Level II,” were held at the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence at Emporia State University June 18, 19-20, and 21, respectively.
“As a veteran teacher, I believe color enhances learning and excites kids of all ages which assists in analyzing reading and writing to be more applicable in composition later,” said Judy Henry, the workshops’ presenter.
Henry explained RAINBOWing uses typical “Crayola” colors as a tool to teach the writing process and to enhance students’ ability to understand written text. Henry is the creator and developer of the RAINBOWing process. She has over 30 years of teaching experience in grades three through eight, and served as chairperson on the committee for the Kansas Writing Standards which were approved by the Kansas Board of Education in 2004.
