Festival to celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year

The Chinese Student Association at Emporia State University will celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year (or Spring Festival) Friday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, located at 823 Merchant. The festival will be downstairs and the doors open at 5:30 and food will be served at 6:00.

Chinese Lunar New Year is the most important festival in countries such as Asia, China, Korea, etc.

“Just a year and a half ago, there were only a dozen of Chinese students studying at ESU, now we have over 150 Chinese students enrolled,” said Eric Yang, Chinese Student Association advisor and biology faculty member. “So the celebration is going to be one that is not in the same category as the standard events calendar that is currently being built.”

At the celebration there will be a talent show program, culture exchange program, and a lot of Chinese food made by students and faculty, or donated by local Chinese restaurants. There will also be prizes for those who can solve the riddles.

Yang said they are expecting more than 300 participants. This event is free, but donations will be accepted.  “This is a great time to try some Chinese and Korean food and culture,” he said.

This event is sponsored by the Korean Student Association, the Chinese Student Association, the Office of International Education, and the University Honors Program. Thanks to The China Buffet, Shanghai Restaurant, Yan-Yan, and The House of Ma for donating food and to the Emporia State University Credit Union and the ESU Foundation for donating prizes.
