ESU to host second annual Hispanic Leadership Day
Emporia State University is hosting its second Hispanic Leadership Day for Emporia High School juniors and seniors Nov. 6, 2006 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Kanza room.
“Hispanic Leadership Day is a special day designed for EHS juniors and seniors. These EHS students will have the opportunity to attend a college class, meet current ESU students, view the residence halls and experience college life first-hand,” said Laura Eddy, Director of Admissions.
The day will include a presentation by Dr. Martin Cuellar, performance by E-Unit, Hip-Hop Dance Team, dinner in the Memorial Union Ballroom and the Hornet Night fair where all academic departments, student organizations and support services will be on-hand to answer any questions EHS students have.
Current ESU students will serve as mentors to the EHS students and give them a tour of the campus. They will visit sample classes and tour offices such as the TRIO programs, Greek Life, Career Services, and Multicultural Programs and Services. Students will also tour residence halls.
“Last year we had 30 participants, this year we are hoping for more. The high school students have the opportunity to learn about college life, visit residence halls and visit different departments and offices on campus,” Eddy said. “They will also have the opportunity to attend an actual ESU class.”
All participants will be registered to win 1 of 4 ESU scholarships to be given away during the event. The scholarships range from $250 - $500. Parents and family members are invited to join their students for dinner, scholarship drawings, and the academic fair, Hornet Night.
“We try our hardest to help students feel comfortable when they come to ESU,” said Elizabeth Nelson, Coordinator of Multicultural Programs and Services. “This partnership with EHS is one of our many outreach programs that we hope to continue.”
