Manhattan native earns Emporia State University scholarship
When Manhattan native Nicole Gannon, a freshman majoring in accounting at Emporia State University, graduates and enters the accounting profession, she’ll have the work experience employers are looking for.
Gannon, a 2005 Manhattan High School graduate, is assisting the ESU athletic department’s business manager in the department’s financial operations. The position is available thanks to the Loretto A. Langley Work Scholarship. Proceeds from the scholarship fund are available to the athletic department for hiring student workers.
Gannon fills a “very important role,” said Kent Weiser, athletics director at Emporia State University. “She is a very bright student and a quality person.
“She has done, and is doing, a great job for the department,” Weiser said. “We’re very pleased that her efforts are being recognized with this award. Not only does this program help her offset some of the costs of college, it provides her with practical, meaningful experience in her accounting major.”
The scholarship was established by Loretto A. Langley, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1926 from Kansas State Teachers College, now ESU. She taught in the Emporia school system for 40 years and served her community in a variety of capacities before passing away in 1999. Langley recognized that scholarships for student jobs would reduce the cost of receiving and delivering an education, since the student and the university are benefited.
Gannon is one of the 1,630 ESU students to earn scholarships for the 2005-06 year, totaling $1.678 million in awards. For more information on ESU scholarships, visit http://scholarships.emporia.edu.
