Educators Learn More Skills on Reaching Diverse Students
Over 85 educators from across the state braved the icy roads and falling snow to attend a workshop aimed at helping them work with at-risk diverse learners.
The workshop, led by Dr. Catherine Collier, called “So What Do I Do Now? Effective Strategies for Prevention, Intervention & Monitoring,” was organized by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence and held Thursday, November 30, 2006.
“I was very impressed with the number of the educators that braved the elements to attend the conference,” said Toni Bowling, the conference’s coordinator. “We had participants from as far away as Ulysses, Kansas. The turnout on Thursday is a good indication of the dedication of teachers, administrators and resource specialist to educate our at-risk students.”
Collier has over 35 years experience in cross-cultural, bilingual, and special education. She completed her Ph.D. with research into the referral of Hispanic students to special education programs and served as diagnostician for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Arizona and Alaska. Dr. Collier created the Bilingual Special Education Curriculum/Training project (BISECT) at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and works extensively with school districts on professional and program development for at-risk diverse learners. Her most recent books include Separating Difference and Disability: Assessing Diverse Learners and Cognitive Learning Strategies for Diverse Learners.
