Emporia State University to host 2006 Lieutenant Gubernatorial Candidate Forum
Engage Emporia - Emporia Kansas – October 24, 2006
Emporia State University officials and the City of Emporia officials announced recently they would host the 2006 Kansas Lieutenant Governor Forum.
Mark Parkinson, running mate for Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' and Sen. Susan Wagle, running mate for Sen. Jim Barnett both have agreed to the October 24 forum.
The Lieutenant Governor Forum is a collaborative effort with ESU, ESU students and the City of Emporia.
“Emporia State University is pleased to host the 2006 Kansas Lieutenant Governor Forum. Universities are bastions of intellectual discourse and encourage debate of ideas and ideologies,” said ESU President John Schwenn. “The forum is a cooperative effort with ESU, ESU students and the City of Emporia. This is another good example of the partnership between the three of us.”
The forum will be held at 7:00 p.m., October 24, in Albert Taylor Hall located in Plumb Hall on the Emporia State University campus. ESU is the only Kansas University selected to host the 2006 Lt. Gubernatorial Forum.
“The City of Emporia is pleased to be a part of this Lt. Governor forum. It is great we have the collaboration of community and campus,” said Emporia Mayor Jim Kessler. “It is important we do things together to make our citizens more aware of the issues that affect them. This is a great opportunity and we’re excited as a city to be able to do this.”
“This is a unique opportunity for ESU students. The Associated Student Government wants our student to be civically engaged. We want students to realize that their vote does matter and the officials they elect make decisions that affect their daily lives as students at higher education institutions,” said Courtney George, sophomore, Crime and Delinquency Studies major and Associated Student Government Legislative Director. “The Lt. Gubernatorial Forum in Emporia is the first step in engaging Emporia and the students of ESU to take an active role in their government.”
ESU student organizations will host a Meet ‘n’ Greet in the Plumb Hall Rotunda for the candidates and other political officials after the forum.
