faye smith, professor in the department of Business Administration and Education, was selected to receive the 2006 President’s Award for Research and Creativity. This award was established in 1996 to honor an Emporia State University individual who has been active in research, scholarly activity, or creative endeavors. The individual receiving this award must be peer-nominated and is selected by a subcommittee of the ESU Faculty Research and Creativity Committee.

smith received her Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Iowa in 1989, with a minor in Economics of Industrial Organization. She came to ESU as an associate professor in 1998, served as acting department chair from January, 2000 - June, 2001, and was promoted to full professor in 2005.

smith’s research in issues of strategy and organizational theory have resulted in many peer-reviewed national and international publications, manuscripts, and refereed conference proceedings. As stated by a colleague, “…the real recognition should be given for the creativity of faye’s research and her service contributions that employ her knowledge in creative ways to assist the university and the Emporia community.” Her most recent publication, “Conflicts Over Creative Control: Power Struggle on Prime Time,” co-authored with Joann Keyton, applies her organizational identity model in a qualitative study of communication issues embedded in filming a popular television series. Her article entitled “Value Creation in the Fine Arts: A System Dynamics Model of Inverse Demand and Information Cascades,” published in the Strategic Management Journal, applied a systematic approach to the processes of creating fine art and creating demand for those products. In addition to her lengthy list of articles, publications, research, and conference presentations, she is also a published poet, with several of her poems published by the National Library of Poetry, Owings Mills, Maryland.

She has assisted many university and community organizations in strategic planning, including ESU’s Center for Innovation, ESU Division of Nursing, the Emporia Arts Council, and the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, for which she serves on the advisory board. Additionally, she provided substantial assistance with the organization of the new Engraving Arts Initiative major sponsored by the Glendo Corporation. Her creativity is not limited to research and consulting however. She incorporates creative activities in her strategic management classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels that motivate student involvement and learning. Among many professional citations and honors, she received the Emporia State University Teaching Excellence Award for 2003-2004.

As a colleague stated, “Dr. smith personifies the active scholarly research and creative endeavors” that the President’s Award for Research and Creativity was established to recognize. smith will be honored at the Research and Creativity Forum award ceremony held in the Colonial Ballroom on Thursday, April 13. She will receive $1,000, an engraved plaque, and her name has been added to the annual plaque on display in the east end of second floor in Plumb Hall.
