ESU students receive scholarship
Megan Birzer, a junior from Ellinwood, Kan., and Christine Koerner, a junior from Ness City, Kan. were recently awarded the Baker-Karst Scholarship at Emporia State University for their academic excellence in the (under)graduate program for rehabilitation.
Both Birzer and Koerner are rehabilitation majors.
The Baker-Karst Scholarship Fund provides assistance to ESU students in the undergraduate rehabilitation services education program or the graduate rehabilitation counseling program who meet exemplary standards –– a 3.0 GPA and 60 hours as an undergraduate, or a 3.5 GPA and 15 hours as a graduate student.
The Baker-Karst Scholarship was first established in 1977, named after two dedicated professionals who worked in the rehabilitation field in Kansas for decades. Dr. Ron Karts was a faculty member in ESU’s rehabilitation program for 21 years. William T. Baker was an ESU graduate and chief of rehabilitation services at the state rehabilitation agency for 33 years.
For students in any of its academic programs, ESU seeks to provide scholarship support; the Baker-Karst Scholarship is one of hundreds. For instance, incoming freshmen and transfer students are guaranteed a Presidential Academic Award of $500 to $1,200 based on academic performance.
