ROUNDTABLE
The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in June 2005:
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE
AWARDS
Dr. John Richard Schrock , professor and chair, Department of Biological Sciences, was one of five biology classroom teaching finalists nationwide brought to Louisiana State University on April 6 by the Wiley Higher Education Group.
Marcia Schulmeister, assistant professor, Department of Physical Sciences, attained the title of “Visiting Scientist” at the Chinese Academy of Science through collaborative research with; conducted water and soil sampling in Shijiazhuang and outlining villages, gave an invited presentation at the CAS institute for Agriculture Modernization. These activities are ongoing and will continue during a second trip to China in July 2005.
CONFERENCE
Mary M. Mingenback , assistant controller, Business Office, attended CACUBO's CMI Level I on May 15 to May 20 at Miami University in Oxford , Ohio . CACUBO is Central Association of College and University Business Officers. CMI is the Collegiate Management Institute – “The program that builds leaders.” CMI Level I is a five-day program that emphasizes the development of creative leadership and management performance skills related to business, administrative, personal, and organizational practices. Participants get involved in intensive studies and practical experiences relevant to everyday work. Each day, following creative presentations, participants are involved in intensive work sessions with team members. In these sessions, case study materials are analyzed in-depth and alternative solutions to campus-related problems are developed.
Jan Borst , instructor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, attended the Smart Marriages Conference in Dallas , June 19-26. She also participated in the PREP [Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program] three-day workshop and is now a certified PREP leader/trainer.
Ken DeLaughder , director of debate, Department of Communication and Theatre, recently attended the Cross Examination Debate Association Summer Topic and Business Conference held in Kansas City , Mo June 10-13. Mr. DeLaughder helped word the topic choices for the debate community for the 2005-06 debate season. The topics were related to US-Chinese foreign policy. Hosting the conference was Darren Elliot, Director of Debate at Kansas City , KS Community College and ESU alum (BA, Comm, 1997).
GRANTS
The following faculty received an Academic Enhancement Proposal grant: Dr. Ron Keith , associate professor, Department of Physical Sciences, Dr. Elizabeth Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Economics, and Dr. David Saunders , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, for interdisciplinary science research student travel in the amount of $2,915.
Marcia Schulmeister, assistant professor, Department of Physical Sciences, received a grant from the American Petroleum Institute for proposal entitled: A High-resolution Investigation of Ground-water Chemistry at Two BTEX-contaminated, Natural Attenuation Sites using Direct-push Geochemical Profiling.
PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Susan Nakao , lecturer, Department of Art, presented two papers at the National Art Education Association Conference in Boston this past March, 05. They are: Asian Art: Traditions and Treasures and Art: Intersecting Science and Satori.
Kevin Rabas , assistant professor, Department of English, won this year's Langston Hughes Award in Poetry, presented by the Lawrence Arts Council and the Raven bookstore. He recently published a poem, “Tiger Shark,” in Soul Fountain and has a story, “Sundowners,” forthcoming in Canada 's literary magazine, Event.
Marcia Schulmeister, assistant professor, Department of Physical Sciences, presented the following papers at National GroundWater Association Ground Water Summit meeting in San Antonio , April, 2005:

Hess, A.L, Schulmeister, M.K., and B. Love (2005) A new, direct-push-based approach for on-site assessment of redox conditions in contaminated aquifers
PUBLICATIONS
Dr. Harvey C. Foyle , professor, Department of Instructional Design & Technology, authored the article, Adding Variety to Social Studies Courses (Using the Internet), in the Southern Social Studies Journal , Volume 30, No. 2, Spring 2005.
