Women have fought for equal rights, demanded equal pay, slashed conventional stereotypes and made tremendous strides in America . In honor of the many contributions and sacrifices, Emporia State University will celebrate March, National Women's History Month, through a variety of programs and events designed to recognize women and educate the community and future generations about the vital roles women of the past, present and future play.
The "Vagina Monologues," a student-directed production to raise awareness of violence against women kicked off the month's events.
An opening reception will be held tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at the Sauder Alumni Center . The Ruth Schillinger Award will be presented to ESU mathematics professor Dr. Connie Schrock.
"The Ruth Schillinger award is ESU's most prestigious award for service to women. It goes to someone who has exhibited the sustained contribution to the welfare of ESU women," said Ginny Higgins, director of ethnic/gender studies.
At 7 p.m. , Mary Daly will present the keynote address entitled "Amazon Grace: Re-Claiming the Courage to Sin Big." Daly is an internationally known author who has spoken at over 300 universities.
"We're very lucky to have her. She will be a challenging if not a controversial speaker. I think she'll shake up this campus," Higgins said. A reception and a book signing will follow the lecture. For free tickets call the office of Ethnic/Gender Studies at 341-5661.
"It is important to recognize the spirit and achievements of women. So much of the time, these things are overlooked. History books seem to focus on wars and males and what they believe. Sparse attention is given to women and their achievements," Higgins said. "This is a celebration that reminds us we have accomplishments. We have an indomitable spirit that flourishes despite obstacles; and Women's History Month celebrates that spirit."
Other events include art shows, lectures, speakers, dramatizations and films. For a complete list of events visit http://www.emporia.edu/ethngend/calendar.html or call the office of Ethnic/Gender Studies at 341 - 5661.
