The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in February 2005:
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE
APPOINTMENTS
Dr. Robert Neufeld , lecturer, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, will be representing the Central Plains region of CCSC (Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges) to the national board meetings on Feb. 23 in St. Louis . The board meetings AND the annual CCSC meeting on Friday, Feb. 25, are held in conjunction with SIGCSE 2005.
Dr. G.P. Youvaraj , associate professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, is serving on the editorial board of Mathematics Newsletter, published by the Ramanujan Mathematical Society.
Dr. Connie Schrock , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, was on the AMTE 2005 Conference Committee.
CONFERENCE
Dr. Antonia Boerkoel , assistant professor, Dr. Connie Schrock , professor, and Dr. Larry Scott, associate professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, attended the Mathematical Association of America workshop, Assessment of Undergraduate Mathematics Programs in Atlanta , GA.
Dr. Joe Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, was a co-organizer of Mathlets for Teaching and Learning Mathematics at the national meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.
Dr. Betsy Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, represented Kansas at the Mathematical Association of America Board of Governors meeting in Atlanta , Ga.
Dr. Robert Neufeld , lecturer, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, will be attending the SIGCSE is the primary professional organization for computer science educators and is the Special Interest Group for Computer Science Education in affiliation with ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), one of the two leading professional organizations for all computer scientists.
GRANTS
Dr. Tim Burnett , assistant professor, Department of Biological Sciences, received a grant titled "Uterine Natural Killer Cells: a Pilot Study in Functional Genomics" from the ESU Faculty Research and Creative Committee.
Dr. Ron Keith , assistant professor, Department of Physical Sciences, Dr. David Saunders , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and Dr. Elizabeth Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, received a grant titled "Mechanisms of Propulsion in Penguins" from the ESU Faculty Research and Creative Committee.
Dr. Leland Sudlow , assistant professor, Department of Biological Sciences, received a grant titled "An Examination of Microtubule Disruption Leading to Neuronal Death During Exposure to Beta-amyloid, the Toxic Peptide of Alzheimer's Disease" from the ESU Faculty Research and Creative Committee.
Dr. Scott Crupper , associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, received a grant titled "Detection of T2 Producing Fusarium Species in Kansas Soybeans" from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Dr. Betsy Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, Dr. Ron Keith , assistant professor, Department of Physical Sciences, and Dr. Dave Saunders , professor, Department of Biological Sciences submitted, "Mechanisms of Propulsion in Penquins" and was funded by ESU's Research and Creativity Committee. Amount funded: $3,000.
PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Marvin Harrell , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, Dr. Nancy Smith , associate professor, Department of Elementary Teacher Education, with Dr. Carol Howald and Dr. Linda Kallam, presented, Designing Effective Online Mathematics Instruction and Assessment, at the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Conference, Dallas, TX.
Dr. Connie Schrock , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, with Dr. Judy O'Neal presented, Keeping Pace with Technology Preparation of Pre-service Mathematics Teachers, at the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Conference, Dallas , TX .
Dr. Joe Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, presented the minicourse, Java Applets in Teaching Mathematics, at the American Mathematical Society/Mathematical Association of America national meeting in Atlanta , Ga.
Dr. Betsy Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, was a co-organizer of the poster session, Special Programs and Strategies to Reach Underrepresented populations, at the AMS/MAA national meetings. She presented a poster about the three ESU programs for young women, EYH, Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics Day and MASTER IT.
Dr. Gary Holcomb , associate professor, Department of English, presented at a conference: "New Negro, New American Studies in Becoming-EU Europe," John F. Kennedy Institute, Freie Universitat , Berlin , Germany , Feb. 13, 2005 . Holcomb also gave a lecture on: "Black Poets of the Interwar Period in Russia ," Romanian Literature Museum , Iasi , Romania , Jan. 28, 2005 . Holcomb gave another lecture for Black History Month titled: "African American Literature and Culture," Black History Month Symposium, American Cultural Center, US Embassy, Bucharest, Romania, Feb. 28, 2005.

Dr. Scott Crupper , associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and former graduate student I.M. Singh collaborated with other researchers to publish "5-Enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phoshate synthase from Staphylococcus aureus is insensitive to glyphosate" in the FEBS Letters. 579: 728-732.
Dr. J. R. Schrock , chair, Department of Biological Sciences, had an "expert" response to "How Do You Make Dissection Exciting" published in the NABT News & Views Newsletter, January 2005:10.
Dr. Myrna M. Cornett-DeVito , professor, Department of Communication and Theatre, Dr. Raffaele DeVito , professor, Department of Business Administration and Education, and David K. Include the designation "Dr." where appropriate.
If your submission lists someone from another university, please indicate the name and location (city, state) of the university.
The Roundtable publishes announcements in the following categories: appointments, awards, conferences, grants, presentations, and publications. Other categories may be included as needed. Announcements are published after the fact, so please hold future information and submit after occurrence.
