ESU debater named academic all American
The Emporia State University Debate team was honored at the Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament held at San Francisco State University , Ca., March 19-22, 2005 by having one of its debaters named as an Academic All-American.
Tiara Naputi, a junior communications and Spanish major, was given the honor along with only 19 other debaters in the nation. Naputi is a native of Peculiar, Mo.
The award recognizes students that demonstrate personal qualities that show them to be understanding of the role of intercollegiate debate in a liberal education. It is designed to honor those that show an ability to compete at the highest levels while still maintaining extremely high academic standards. Recipients must also show a commitment to bettering their communities.
"We're honored to have Tiara selected to receive this honor," said Ken DeLaughder, Director of Debate. "This is the highest award that CEDA can bestow on a student for their academic and debate performance. Tiara works tirelessly to be successful and is a great student. She is a great role model for women in debate."
Naputi serves the ESU as a resident advisor for Morse Hall, and serves the Emporia community as a volunteer for numerous causes, including the SOS organization.
She has won numerous debate accolades, including the top speaker award at this year's Augustana Invitational. She is the 2003 Junior Varsity Debate Champion, and a 2004 semifinalist. In 2004 she was an elimination round participant at the CEDA National Tournament. She has also been honored with the Alumni Scholarship and Pflaum Debate Scholarship, as well as being a member of Lamba Pi Eta, the Communication Honorary Society.
