President Kay Schallenkamp serves on national athletics panel
Emporia State University President Kay Schallenkamp recently visited sunny Orlando, Fla. to attend the 2005 Division II Chancellors and Presidents Summit.
This unprecedented gathering of more than 150 chancellors and presidents from Division II institutions celebrated the division's success, discussed its future and reviewed a study that analyzed the financial realities of moving from Division II to Division I. NCAA President Myles Brand also attended the summit.
The summit opened June 24 and ended June 26. A dinner and reception was held during the summit to celebrate Division II intercollegiate athletics. The dinner paid tribute to former Division II student-athletes whose experiences in college helped them achieve lifelong success.
Brand was the speaker at the opening business session and discussed mission creep and the overall stability of Division II. Summit attendees got their first look at a financial study commissioned by the Division II Presidents Council that assesses the financial returns of increase athletic spending and moving from Division II to Division I. Brand is the author of the study.
President Schallenkamp was one of five presidents on a panel that responded to the study of intercollegiate athletics funding and the fiscal issues facing DII institutions.
