Bleeker appointed as state coordinator

Barbara Bleeker, a professor in the department of early childhood and elementary teacher education, was recently appointed to serve as State Coordinator of the Promising Young Writers Program for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
The Promising Young Writers Program is an NCTE-sponsored competition designed to honor eighth-grade students in the United States , Canada , and American schools abroad for excellence in writing. The State Coordinator directs the work of the teams of state judges.
Bleeker was the 2005 recipient of the 2005 Xi Phi Outstanding Faculty award, the highest honor bestowed upon an ESU faculty member. She teaches language arts courses in the early childhood-elementary education department and also advises. She has been an ESU faculty member since 1987.
In 1997 she received a National Academic Advising Association Outstanding Advisor Award and in 2000 she was the first ESU faculty member to receive the Golden Apple Award from the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce.
Bleeker recently helped ESU students write and publish a bi-lingual book titled “What I Can do at ESU.”
The National Council of Teachers of English, with 60,000 individual and institutional members worldwide, is dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education
