The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in December 2004:
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE
APPOINTMENTS
Gerrit W. Bleeker , professor, Department of English, has been selected to serve as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His primary duties will be to serve as Director of the Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) online degree program, serve as Director of the General Education Program, serve as liaison between the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Teachers College, and represent the College at various functions and councils in the absence of the Dean.
Diana Kuhlman , director, Budget Department, continues to serve on the Audit Committee of the Central Association of College and University Business Officers (CACUBO). The primary objective of CACUBO is to plan, provide and encourage professional and personal development for all levels of management in the business and financial area of higher education. Kuhlman's contributions to the association will assist CACUBO in reaching its goals and objectives.
AWARDS
Brian Schrader , associate professor, Department of Psychology and Special Education, was honored with the Excellence in Instruction award. Besides being an engaged faculty member, Schrader's development of a course for graduate teaching assistants to familiarize them with university teaching is viewed as his most outstanding contribution. This exceptional program has generated requests from faculty all over the nation who are interested in duplicating its success.
Connie Briggs , associate professor, Department of Early Childhood and Elementary teacher Education, and Director of ESU's Reading Recovery® Program, was recognized for her work for children's literacy. She received the award for her activities - from chairing a committee for an international professional organization, to working one-on-one with elementary school children. Briggs' service focuses on meeting the needs of Kansas educators, especially in teaching children to read.
Phil Bennett , associate dean, The Teachers College, was given the Darrell E. Wood Service Award. Each year The Teachers College presents the Darrell E. Wood Service Award to an individual who has supported the mission of the college in a unique or outstanding manner. The award is not limited to faculty or administration, but instead recognizes any staff member, classified or unclassified, who has served The Teachers College in an exemplary way. Bennett oversaw the recent re-accreditation of The Teachers College by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. He also served as acting dean during the Fall 2004 semester.
CONFERENCE
Dr. Darla Mallein , assistant professor, Department of Social Sciences, presented a session on "Using the Multiple Intelligences to teach Civics" at the National Council for the Social Studies national conference in Baltimore, Maryland on November 19.
PRESENTATIONS
Gary Holcomb , associate professor, Department of English, presented, "Langston Unashamed: Hughes's 1930s Proletarian Fiction." Eighth International Conference for the Short Story in English. Universidad de Alcalá de Henares , Spain , October 2004. Gary Holcomb also presented, "New Negro, New American Studies." As well as served on the panel, "The African American--A New Perspective?" Romanian Society for English and American Studies, Seventh International Conference. University of Galati , Romania , October 2004.
Sherry Backhus , assistant professor, Department of University Libraries and Archives, presented a paper titled "Basic Brick Tours that Click with Students" at the Brick and Click Libraries Symposium held in Maryville , Missouri October 22, 2004 .
Susan Dollar , director, Career Services, successfully defended her dissertation and earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at Texas A&M University in College Station .
Dr. David R. Edds , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, published "Batasio macronotus, a new species of bagrid catfish from Nepal (Teleostei: Siluriformes)" in the Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 15: 295-300.
