The Emporia State University Black Student Union (BSU) has scheduled an array of events during February in honor of Black History Month.
"Black History Month serves as an important opportunity for the ESU community to focus on the rich history and achievements of African-Americans in politics, literature, sports, art, music and more," said Elizabeth Nelson, Multicultural Programs & Services, Coordinator. "February is a time when ESU students can concentrate their efforts on programming that celebrates the history of blacks in this country."
The big event this year is "In the Mind of a Poet" a time where students can listen to poetry written by African Americans. This event will be held in the Greek room from 8-10 p.m. on Feb. 10.
Students also aim to educate the university about inventions that were created by African Americans. BSU hopes to achieve this goal by asking students to restrict themselves from using certain inventions made by African Americans. A few of the inventions include the air conditioner, cell phone, elevator, hairbrush, ironing board, and peanut butter. BSU asks for participation in this activity every Monday in February.
"We have put in a great deal of time, effort and energy into this country and Black history is something to celebrate, and should be celebrated year round," said Derrais Carter, BSU Black History committee member.
Another event planned for Feb. 23 is "A Day of Black Tears." This is a day where African American students will draw a black tear on their face and not speak to anyone in remembrance of all of those who lost their lives in the struggle for equal rights. Students will carry a card with them that will educate others about Black history on the ESU campus and that explains why they are not talking.
BSU and Union Activities Council is co-sponsoring comedian Damon Williams on Feb. 24. Williams is considered an elite up and coming comedian and has hosted several episodes of "It's Showtime at the Apollo" and performed numerous times on "BET's Comic View." The show will begin at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union Hornet's Nest.
"We want to encourage the ESU community to get involved in learning more about both well-known and lesser-known people and events that helped shape America ," said Nelson.
