ROUNDTABLE

The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in March 2005:

 

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE

APPOINTMENTS

Dr. Greg Smith , assistant professor, Department of Biological Sciences, selected Vice-Chair of the Kansas Nongame Wildlife Advisory Council.

CONFERENCE

Dr. James Aber , professor, Dr. DeWayne Backhus , professor, Dr. Robert Jones , professor, and Dr. Eric Trump , associate professor, and Elizabeth Fitch, graduate student, Department of Physical Sciences, attended the 137th annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science on March 18-19 at Johnson County Community College , Overland Park , KS .

Dr. Bob Neufeld , lecturer, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, attended the Kansas Section Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America at KU on March 18-19. Keynote speaker was Oscar Gonzalez of the University of Texas-Austin.

PRESENTATIONS

Dr. James Aber , professor, Susan Aber , lecturer, Department of Physical Sciences, and D. Eberts, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, presented a poster titled "Applications of Kite Aerial Photography: Biocontrol of Salt Cedar in the Western United States;" Dr. Robert Jones , professor, had a poster presentation titled "Computing Beyond Algorithms;" Dr. DeWayne Backhus , professor, had an oral presentation titled "The Astronomical Prints of E. L. Trouvelot at Emporia State University;" and Dr. Eric Trump , associate professor, served as a judge for the chemistry student award competition. All presentations were made at the 137th annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science was March 18-19 at Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS.

Dr. Derek A. Zelmer , assistant professor, Department of Biological Sciences, presented a paper titled "Investigating Waterfowl Abundances in Public Compared to Protected Marshes on the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge" at the Spring Meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

Dr. Gregory A. Smith , assistant professor, and Molly Humphries, graduate student, Department of Biological Sciences, presented a paper titled "Effects of Small-Scale Artificial Habitat Fragmentation on Sigmodon hispidus and Microtus ochrogaster" at the Spring Meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

PUBLICATIONS

Dr. David Edds , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and Matt Combes (B.S. 1996, M.S. 2003) had "Mussel Assemblages Upstream From Three Kansas Reservoirs" published in the 2005 Journal of Freshwater Ecology 20(1): 139-148.

Dr. Ken Weaver , professor, Department of Psychology and Special Education, has had his article "1992 Through 2001: An Incredible 10 Years for High School Psychology" published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, volume 24, pp. 97-110.

Please identify all individuals named in your submission according to title (professor, associate professor, assistant professor, instructor, e.g.) and department (Department of Biological Sciences, Counselor Education and Rehabilitation Programs, e.g.). Include the designation "Dr." where appropriate.

If your submission lists someone from another university, please indicate the name and location (city, state) of the university.

The Roundtable publishes announcements in the following categories: appointments, awards, conferences, grants, presentations, and publications. Other categories may be included as needed. Announcements are published after the fact, so please hold future information and submit after occurrence.
