School of Business to hold career day
The Emporia State University campus will be abuzz on Wednesday, as more than 330, students, from 29 high schools will be attending the annual School of Business Career Day.
Many professionals will attend Wednesday between 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. in Memorial Union. Such professionals as accountants, managers, marketing personnel, business teachers, and more will be giving presentations. The idea is to get these students introduced into this new world and inform them about their options.
“The purpose of the event is to introduce high school students to the various fields of business open to them. Many don't realize that the field of business encompasses subjects as diverse as finance, marketing, management, law, and in some cases even economics,” said Ken Schallenkamp, assistant professor, business administration and education. “If, while the students are on campus, they find that they enjoy the campus and/or Emporia , well that's just fine too.”
By giving them a day in which they can browse different career choices and expand their selections, they can make better college choices. The professionals can give advice as to what type of education is required to fulfill some of the roles. In addition, they can get a perspective from a business professional. Not only are they getting to browse career options, they will be given the chance to browse the ESU campus and see all that it has to offer them as incoming students.
This event, which has been held for over 30 years, is planned and organized by the School of Business students. However, they do more than just plan this large event. They will also serve as student moderators to help with the educational sessions. In addition, they will make up a panel at the event called, Business Education, “College Life from a Student's Perspective. The keynote speaker is Kim Dhority, a business teacher at Northern Heights High School .
Jerry Pavlik, Project Manager of Payless ShoeSource Worldwide, Inc., will speak on accounting and computer information systems. The other presentation is focused on business administration, management, marketing, and international business. Presentation will also be given by Bruno Montoya, human resources representative and Nancy Copeland, product specialist for Hopkins Manufacturing.
