The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in September 2005:
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE
APPOINTMENTS
Dr. Connie Schrock , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, is serving as a NCTM-NCATE auditor for SPA reports.
Dr. Betsy Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, has been selected by the Mathematical Association of America to serve on the Ad Hoc Committee to draft the regulations for the newly created national award, the Euler Book Prize. Dr. Yanik is also serving as an outside reviewer for two tenure cases (at institutions in Minnesota and North Carolina ).
AWARDS
Dr. Betsy Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring during ceremonies in Washington DC , May 16. Awardees met with President Bush in the Oval Office.
CONFERENCES
Dr. Joe Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, and students, Renee Sull and Chris Alpers, attended the Cryptography Workshop held at Central Oklahoma University in May.
Dr. Marvin Harrell , Dr. Joe Yanik , and Dr. Betsy Yanik, professors, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, participated in the Women Count Conference in Albuquerque , New Mexico .
Dr. Joe Yanik and Dr. Betsy Yanik, professors, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, participated in the Mathematical Association of America's Mathfest Conference in Albuquerque , New Mexico .
Dr. Betsy Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, organized the third Women Count Conference, a national conference for directors of outreach programs to encourage underrepresented populations in mathematics. The conference was held on August 2, 2005 in Albuquerque , New Mexico . Dr. Yanik also represented Kansas mathematicians as the Kansas Governor at the Mathematical Association of America Board of Governor's meeting in Albuquerque in August.
GRANTS
Dr. Brian Hollenbeck, assistant professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, received an ESU Academic Enhancement Grant for Building Community-Colloquia &Conferences, amount awarded, $3,000.
Dr. Chuck Pheatt, associate professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, received an ESU Academic Enhancement Grants for Power Tool Drag Races ($875) and Small College Computing Conferences ($1,000).
Dr. Betsy Yanik, professor, (with Dr. Ron Keith, associate professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, and Dr. Dwight Moore, associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences) received an ESU Academic Grant for Interdisciplinary Student Travel, amount awarded, $2,915.
Dr. Betsy Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, received a grant as part of her Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring from the National Science Foundation, amount awarded, $10,000.
PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Ton Boerkoel, assistant professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, presented, “Reflections on Geometry” at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras , Chennai , India . Approximately 90 people attended the talk.
Dr. Betsy Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, presented “ Emporia State University 's Initiatives in Encouraging Young Women in Mathematics and Science” presented at the Symposium during the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring ceremonies, Washington , DC . May 17.
Dr. Joe Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, presented “Determining the prime factors of a large number- with applications to Number Theory” during the Women Count Conference in Albuquerque.
PROGRAMS
Dr. Marvin Harrell and Dr. Betsy Yanik, professors, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, directed the 6th ESU Master It camp. This program brought 21 eighth or ninth grade young women to campus for a variety of scientific and mathematical hands-on activities, career discussions, and field trips.
Dr. Betsy Yanik, (with Dr. Ron Keith professors, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, and Dr. Dave Saunders, professor Department of Biological Sciences) directed the Penguin Project, a week-long Girl Scout program funded by a Lockheed Martin grant. During this week a group of 12 Girl Scouts in grades 4-7 went to the Henry Dooley Zoo in Omaha to film penguins; returning to Emporia State to analyze this films using digital imaging software. Each penguin team (each representing a different species), presented a PowerPoint presentation of their scientific results to their parents at the closing banquet.
