Math, reading, and school improvement addressed in upcoming educator workshops
Five workshops aimed at helping educators meet standards tied to No Child Left Behind are being offered this fall. One reading workshop, three math standards workshops, and a workshop aimed at improving schools are being offered by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence (JIEE) this fall.
- An October 27 workshop offers educators in third through sixth grades assistance with Guided Reading and Writing instruction. The workshop aims to enable students to use efficient reading and writing habits to empower their learning experiences through teacher-implemented literacy instruction. The registration fee for this conference is $90 per person and includes the cost of materials.
- “ Red, White & Blue Data Analysis 2006” on November 8 will feature presenters Bob Winkler and Carol Hailey; Winkler is a data resource expert and Hailey is a staff development/school improvement specialist. Educators will leave the workshop with a n analysis of their building's performance on the 2005 KS assessment in both reading and mathematics, a plan for using reading strategies across the curriculum, and a plan for the 2006 school year to address tested indicators.
- “ Implementing the Revised Kansas Math Standards: High School Level ” on November 9 will feature Jo Musselwhite, a member of the state committee which sets the math standards for Kansas public schools. This workshop will cover the revised Kansas Mathematics Standards for the 2005-2006 school year. Educators will come away with a clearer picture of what the standards require of Kansas 's students and a plan of how to address those standards in their classroom.
- “ Implementing the Revised Kansas Math Standards / Middle School ” on November 10 will feature Betsy Weins, who has served as the co-chair of the Kansas State Mathematics Standards Revision Committee. This workshop will involve investigating the revised standards and what the expectations are at the middle school levels. As a follow-up, the Jones Institute will bring teachers together to work in teams on best practices for teaching the standards and to develop assessment items to measure progress toward the standards.
- “ Implementing the Revised Kansas Math Standards / Grades 3-5” on November 17 will feature Pat Foster, an active trainer of educators so their instruction to meet the state standards. Educators attending this workshop will come away with new ideas on how to address those standards in their classrooms. In addition, the group will acquire assessment items to help measure progress toward the standards.
All workshops will be held at the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence, The Earl Center, Emporia State University , 1601 State St. Registration fees for workshops are $60 (covering materials, lunch and refreshments) per person unless otherwise noted.
