ROUNDTABLE

The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in August 2004:

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE

 

  APPOINTMENTS

Dr. Deborah Burns , physician specialist, Department of Health Services, was appointed to the KS Health Care Stabilization Fund by Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger.

  AWARDS

Jeremy Tiemann , Biological Sciences alum, won the best professional poster award for water quality at the 134th annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society, in Madison, WI, in August, based on his master's research at ESU: Jeremy Tiemann (M.S. 2002), David Gillette (M.S. 2002), Dr. Mark Wildhaber, adjunct professor, and Dr. David Edds , professor, Department of Biological Sciences. Effects of lowhead dams on fish assemblages in the Neosho River, Kansas, with emphasis on the Neosho madtom, Noturus placidus , a federally-listed threatened species.

CONFERENCE

Dr. Diane Okeson , assistant professor, Newman Division of Nursing, attended an international conference- The Third International Conference of the Post FIPSE-EU Consortium: Promoting and Sharing Global Health: Visions and Strategies. This conference hosted by Washburn University , Topeka , KS on July 10-13, 2004 .

PRESENTATIONS

  Dr. Tom Eddy , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, served as a field guide and interpreter of Flint Hills agriculture and natural history for an international meeting on "Global Health - Vision and Strategy" sponsored by the School of Nursing at Washburn University .

Dr. John Richard Schrock , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, was a guest lecturer on "Education in the People's Republic of China " at the KU East Asia Studies Teacher Workshop at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park on July 23 rd .

Elizabeth Schmanke , lecturer, Department of Psychology and Special Education, of the Department of Psychology & Special Education graduate art therapy program, presented July 27 on "Medical Art Therapy" at a workshop for nurses on Alternative and Complementary Healing sponsored by Allen County Community College.

Dr. Shonda McLaughlin , assistant professor, Department of Counselor Education Rehabilitation Programs, traveled to Chicago , Illinois on July 20, 2004 to attend the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns (NAMRC) annual conference. While there she presented two presentations, titled, "Rehabilitation and Disability: Belize , Central America ," and, "Rehabilitation and Disability Related Issues in the United Arab Emirates ."

Dr. Marcus Childress, associate professor, and Dr. Dusti Howell , associate professor, Department of Instructional Design & Technology, presented: Point/Counterpoint: PowerPoint and the Dumbing -Down of America . Presented at the Colleague to Colleague Summer Institute (SIDLIT), Olathe , KS - August, 2004

Dr. Marcus Childress, associate professor, and Dr. Harvey Foyle, professor, Department of Instructional Design & Technology, presented: Improving Student Technological Conceptions, Attitudes and Usage through the Intervention of the Intel Teach to The Future Curriculum. Presented at the Annual Meeting of the National Social Science Association, Las Vegas , NV- April, 2004

Dr. Marcus Childress, associate professor, Dr. Harvey Foyle, professor, E-Lu Chen , graduate student, Elaine Blaufuss , graduate student, and Jason Knowles graduate student, Department of Instructional Design & Technology, presented: Designing and Developing Digital Resources to Support Academic Departments: Graduate Students Putting Knowledge and Skills into Action . Presented at the Annual Meeting of the National Social Science Association, Las Vegas , NV- April, 2004

Dr. Diane Okeson , assistant professor, Newman Division of Nursing, presented a paper and two posters this summer at a national conference for nurse educators - Fifteenth Annual Nurse Educators Conference in the Rockies - in Breckenridge , Colorado , July 29,30, and 31, 2004. The paper presentation was titled: Mentoring = Successful Faculty Orientation. One poster presentation was titled: ASSESSMENT to Change: The ABC's . The other poster was co-authored with Cathy Pimple , assistant professor, Newman Division of Nursing and was titled: The M.I. (Multiple Intelligence Teacher.

PUBLICATIONS

  Dr. Scott Crupper , associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and graduate students, Inder Singh and Sukhminder Singh , and undergraduate Martha McMurphy , had "Antibiotic Susceptibility of Edwardsiella hoshinae Isolated from Northern Bobwhite Quail ( Colinus virginianus ) published in the Veterinary Record on July 3, 2004 .

Sherry H. Backhus , assistant professor, and associate professor, Department of University Libraries and Archives. "Collaboration: The Key to Unlocking the Dilemma of Distance Reference Services;" The Reference Librarian, Numbers 83/84, 2003, 193-202.

Include the designation "Dr." where appropriate.

If your submission lists someone from another university, please indicate the name and location (city, state) of the university.

The Roundtable publishes announcements in the following categories: appointments, awards, conferences, grants, presentations, and publications. Other categories may be included as needed. Announcements are published after the fact, so please hold future information and submit after occurrence.
