ROUNDTABLE
The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in October 2004:
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE
APPOINTMENTS
Dr. Elizabeth Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, is serving on the Screening Committee for the Associate Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Connie Schrock, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, is serving on the Program Committee of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators 2005 Annual meeting. Schrock is also on the steering committee to create middle level statewide content courses to help middle school teachers obtain middle level endorsements.
AWARDS
Dr. Elizabeth Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, is one of the women featured in the book, A Passion of Her Own: Life-Path Journeys with Women of Kansas . She participated in a book-signing gathering at Town Crier and a local radio interview.
Dr. Scott Waters , professor, Department of Elementary Education, received the 2004 Friend of Kansas Council for the Social Studies award for his contributions to the organization the past 15+ years. The award was presented on September 27 at the KCSS Fall Conference held at the Kansas State History Museum in Topeka , KS .
CONFERENCE
Dr. Marvin Harrell , professor, Dr. Chuck Pheatt , assistant professor, and Dr. Elizabeth Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, attended the Kansas Statewide EPSCoR Conference in Manhattan , KS .
Dr. John Richard Schrock , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, along with other ESU chairs attended an all-day management conference on September 7 held in Emporia . Schrock also spent September 9 at the KSDE conference in Topeka where departments across Kansas described and defended their KSDE/NCATE matrix of teacher competencies. Schrock, along with representatives from other ESU departments attended the Core Competencies Meeting in Wichita on September 17 where community colleges and universities refined expected competencies for general education courses.
GRANTS
Dr. Chuck Pheatt, assistant professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Economics, and Dr. Dave Saunders , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, received a mini-grant from the National Computational Science Institute. The grant will be used to purchase software in support of submitting a $1.5MM Graduate teaching Fellow grant. Amount awarded, $300.
Dr. Elizabeth Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, Dr. Ron Keith , associate professor, Department of Physical Sciences, and Dr. Dave Saunders, professor, Department of Biological Sciences, received an ESU Academic Enhancement grant for the project, Investigating Upper Level Interdisciplinary Sciences, amount awarded, $2,688.
Dr. Elizabeth Yanik, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, met on campus with representatives of the grant administration department of the Office of Naval Research as the only ESU grantee with a funded project under their auspices.
MEETINGS
Dr. Connie Schrock, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, set up a cognitive coaching meeting by ESSDACK for the Council on Teacher Education. She also attended a state department meeting to discuss mathematics content assessments for NCATE.
Dr. Marvin Harrell , professor, and Dr. Elizabeth Yanik , professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, were invited to meet with NSF Program Director Judith Ramaley as part of her visit with NSF EPSCoR personnel at the University of Kansas .
Dr. Tom Eddy , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, was a participant in the Multi-State Lespedeza Work Group annual meeting held in Clinton , MO.
PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Marvin Harrell and Dr. Elizabeth Yanik, professors, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics presented, "Expanding Your Horizons" at the BioSciences and the New Economy in Kansas : Kansas Statewide EPSCoR Conference, Sept. 8 in Manhattan , KS .
Dr. Tom Eddy , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, spoke on "Facets of the Flint Hills - How Can We Approach Sustainability?" at the Matfield Green Conference.
Dr. John Richard Schrock , professor, Department of Biological Sciences, summarized John Money's work and recent brain research in "What Can the Biology Teacher Say About Gender Identity?" at the Kansas Association of Biology Teachers Annual Meeting at Wichita State University on September 25.

Dr. Scott Crupper , associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and ESU students Jueng-Eun Lee, Katie Kreuger, and Huimin Yan were pictured in the feature article on the front of the Emporia Gazette weekend edition for September.
SCHOOL OUTREACH
Dr. Tim Burnett , assistant professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and Mrs. Burnett conducted a workshop for the Gardner-Edgerton School District entitled "Science and our Food Supply." They introduced 18 teachers to NSTA-approved curriculum materials dealing with the control of food-bourne pathogens and taught participants some simple microbiology assays that they can incorporate into their classrooms, including wet lab that involved assessing the amount of bacteria that remained after cooking hamburgers to different internal temperatures.
Dr. David Saunders , professor, Department of Biological Science, spoke on September 23 rd to Nichole Ferris' sixth grade class at the Neosho Rapids Elementary school . The topic of interest was the human body's response to bacteria and viruses. Dr. Saunders took a few microscopes and blood smear slides to the class so that the students could look at red and white blood cells. This visit was a part of an ESU Innovative Grant awarded to a group of ESU scientists and mathematicians to work with middle school teachers and students to promote increased awareness of mathematics and science. Future visits to Nichole's classroom are being planned.
Dr. Connie Schrock, professor, Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics, taught a three-week course for Emporia middle school teachers this summer as part of the 3M project. She also spent a week in Dodge City teaching mathematics in sessions for elementary and secondary teachers.
