Tuszynska wins Laurence C. Boylan Award
Agnieszka Tuszynska, an international student from Soleakuj , Poland , received the Laurence C. Boylan Award for the outstanding master's thesis produced during the 2003 - 2004 academic year.
Ms. Tuszynska, who received her master's degree in English in August of 2004, was recognized for her thesis, "Putting Flesh On The Radicals: The Black Female Body in Angelina Weld Grimke, Georgia Douglas Johnson, and Margaret Walker." Ms. Tuszynska's graduate thesis advisor was Gary Holcomb, associate professor of English.
A native speaker of Polish, she has studied, in addition to English, German, Italian, and Latin, and in 1998 was a finalist in the National Latin Olympics in Warsaw , Poland. While at ESU, Ms. Tuszynska was a graduate teaching assistant in the English Department and received an Academic Achievement Award in 2003. Ms. Tuszynska is currently earning her Ph.D at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The Laurence C. Boylan Award was created by a special fund drive to honor Boylan, who was creator of the graduate program and dean of graduate studies from 1958-66. The Laurence C. Boylan Fund provides awards for distinguished scholarship in graduate study at ESU by honoring the best master's thesis each year and providing two special scholarships for outstanding ESU graduate students who will be recognized as Boylan Scholars.
Ms. Tuszynska will receive an award of $250, her name will be added to the Laurence C. Boylan Award plaque on display in the Office of Graduate Studies, Plumb Hall 313, and her achievement will be recognized at the spring 2005 research forum.
