ROUNDTABLE
The
following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported
to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in April 2004:
AWARDS
Dr. Rebekah Sheely, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting and Computer Information Systems, won the Best Manuscript Award of the Teaching and Curriculum Section at the Midwest American Accounting Association’s conference in Kansas City, held March 25-27. The manuscript was titled, “Tax Software versus Paper Return: The Effect of a Computerized Decision Aid and Learning Styles on Cognitive Effort and Student Learning”.
CONFERENCES
Elaine Henrie, associate Director for Student Financial Aid, attended the NASFAA (National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators) Best Practices Symposium April 16 and 17 in Dallas, Texas.
National Association of Bilingual Educators
The following faculty members attended the National Association of Bilingual Educators conference in Albuquerque, NM, February 2 - 7, 2004.

Kristin Grayson also co-presented “An Innovative Training of Teachers to Use Research-Based Methodologies”
Dr. Kimberly Kreicker, instructor for Project Best ESL Grant, for the Department of Foreign Languages
Dr. Kreicker also co-presented “From the Mountains to the Prairies: Developing Programs for Rural and Low-Incidence English Language Learners” with Dr. Joel B. Judd of Adams State College in Colorado
Also attending were students who had completed their ESL certification in Project Best ESL Grant, Cindy Berard, Amanda Newitt and Marsha Plese, all teachers in the Shawnee Mission School District.
English Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom
On January 26, 2004 a day-long professional development seminar, English Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom (sponsored by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Languages) was attended by these ESU faculty members:

PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Pat Wade, Director of the Student Life and Counseling Center, Dr. Jaque Schmidt, Counselor in the ESU Counseling Center, and Kathy Tidwell, ESU DART Program Coordinator, presented a program titled, “Lessons Learned: Redefining the Counseling Center’s Approach to Student Drinking Behavior” at the National Conference of the American College Counselors Association on March 10 - 12, in Biloxi, Mississippi. The material presented was supported by data and statistical analysis performed by Dr. Michael Leftwich, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Special Education at ESU.
Dr. Tom Eddy, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, presented a program to the Greater Emporia Garden Club on Insect-Plant Interactions. He also presented four science education workshops for the Missouri Department of Education at Osage Beach, Missouri and taught in the Santa Fe Elderhostel on the History, Management, and Ethnobotany or the Tallgrass Prairie.
Kristin Grayson, instructor for Project Achievement ESL Grant serving several northeast Kansas school districts, along with Sharon Gregory, an administrator with USD 352, Goodland, discussed Project Achievement ESL Grant on Radio Station KWGB, AM730 in Goodland, Kansas.
Elaine Henrie, associate director and Connie Corcoran, assistant Director for Student Financial Aid presented “Sustaining Change”, based on the Fish Sticks! concept at the spring KASFAA (Kansas Association of Financial Aid Administrators) on April 8 in Topeka, Kansas.
Dr. Connie S. Schrock, professor of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science presented a paper, Performance Assessment Models for to the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics in Philadelphia on April 21. She also presents a paper, “Unlock Students’ Mathematical Potential with the Missing Key: Estimation,” on April 23, 2004 at the 82nd Annual National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
PUBLICATIONS
Dr. Christopher C. Lovett, associate professor of history in the Department of Social Sciences, had an article published “The 1960s” in The Columbia Champion to American History on Film, edited by Peter Rollins, Columbia University Press, 2004. In addition Dr. Lovett has had the following book reviews published in Choice, a journal of the American Library Association, for March: Gary Kern, A Death in Washington: Walter G. Krivitsky and the Stalin Terror and John Neale, A People’s History of the Vietnam War.
Dr. Jaqueline L. Schmidt, counselor in the Student Life and Counseling
Center, and Dr. Stephen L. Benton, Dr. Fred B. Newton, Dr. Sherry
Benton, Dr. KangHyun Shin, and Douglas W. Newton of Kansas State
University, Manhattan, Kansas, had an article titled, “College
Student Protective Strategies and Drinking Consequences” published
in the January 2004 issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol.
Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, M.E. Everhart, and R.E. Kuhn had “Infrapopulation Dynamics of a Wild Strain of Taenia crassiceps (WFU) (Cestoda: Taeniidae) in BALB/cJ Mice” published in the Journal of Parasitology.
Dr. Tom Eddy, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, had “Invasion Dynamics and Biological Control Prospects for Sericea Lespedeza in Kansas” published in Great Plains Research. He also had “The Effect of Sericea Lespedeza on the Ecology of the Tallgrass Prairie in Kansas” published in the Proceedings of the 18th North American Prairie Conference.
Dr. Marco Polo Hernandez Cuevas, assistant professor of Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages, has had his essay, “El son callejero de los negros y los de color quebrado: el teatro nacional mexicano de protesta” accepted for publication in PALARA, no. 8, Fall 2004. PALARA is the leading journal in African diaspora sutides with emphasis upon languages and literatures of the Americas.
Dr. Carol L. Russell, associate professor in the Department of Early Childhood/Elementary Teacher Education, authored, “Understanding Nonverbal Learning Disorders in Children with Spina Bifida” for the Council for Exceptional Children’s journal, TEACHING EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN, Vol. 36, no. 4, March/April, 2004.
APPOINTMENT
Dr. Elizabeth Locey, associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages, was elected to the office of Secretary for the MLA affiliated international organization, Women in French.
Dr. Kenneth Weaver, professor and chair in the Department of Psychology and Special Education, completed his term as the 50th President of the Southwestern Psychological Association on April 10th at the association’s annual convention in San Antonio, Texas.
