smith named Outstanding Teacher
March 12, 2004 | Associate Professor faye smith is ESU’s 2004 Outstanding Teaching award winner. The award recognizes a faculty member’s accomplishments solely in the area of instruction. smith has taught strategic management, organizational behavior and other business courses at ESU since 1998. In their nomination forms, smith’s students note how her teaching style helps them understand complex abstract topics such as economics, marketing and management in a meaningful way. smith will receive a small stipend and an opportunity to share her methods with other ESU faculty.
March 12, 2004 | Graduate student Leah Childers has been given the Laurence C. Boylan Scholar Award for 2004-05. The award was created in honor of the creator of ESU’s graduate program and Dean of Graduate Studies from 1958 to 1966. Childers will be awarded a cash stipend of $2,300 and her name will be added to the Boylan Award plaque in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.
March 12, 2004 | The School of Library and Information Management will welcome to its faculty Linda Lillard, most recently an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky. Lillard also previously chaired the Department of Library Science at Central Missouri State University. A graduate of ESU’s Ph.D. program in library and information management, Lillard’s research interests include information needs and information-seeking behavior of people working in online environments. She is also interested in entrepreneurship, distance education, online teaching and library services for distance learners.
Business etiquette dinner planned
March 12, 2004 | The Career Services office will sponsor its Business Etiquette Dinner March 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Skyline Dining Room. Students and community members are invited to participate in a fine dining experience and learn the basics of formal table manners. Tickets are $10, and may be purchased at Career Services in South Morse Hall, Room 433. Call 341-5407 for more information.
Schneider to present “The Conservative
Century”
March 12, 2004 | Associate Professor of Social Sciences Greg Schneider will present his perspectives on the conservative movement in an early morning discussion March 18 at 7 a.m. in the Phi Delta Kappa Room of the Memorial Union. His presentation is called “The Conservative Century: From Reaction to Revolution.” Schneider will address how conservatism has evolved over the course of the 20th century from its opposition to progressivism and the New Deal to the reforms and policies that led it to its present day dominance in American politics. This “Good Morning Discussion” is sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.
Public invited to Corkys on Parade

Emporians are invited to celebrate the Corkys on Parade during a gala and auction on March 19. The evening will include hors d’oeuvres, beverages and the unveiling of the miniature bronze Corky. One of the ten fiberglass figurines will be awarded “Best of Show” and each of eight remaining decorated fiberglass Corkys displays of the two missing Corkys -- by ESU student-athletes -- will be auctioned. All funds raised will benefit the Presidential Academic Awards scholarship program. The gala and auction will be held at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic Street, from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. RSVP by March 16 by calling 341-5440.
March 4, 2004 | Five ESU graduate students have been selected for the 2004-2005 Academic Achievement Awards, an honor created by the President’s Office to encourage advanced study, research and creative activities. Students were nominated by their major departments and selection was made by members of the ESU Graduate Council. Recipients are required to pursue a worthwhile project or academic service. In addition to a graduate assistantship, they receive an additional stipend of $1,496. The award winners were Shero Alloush, English; Muhieddin Baddour, English; Ryan Diehl, English; Dragos Galusca, Biological Sciences; and Barry Smart, Biological Sciences.
