The
following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported
to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in May 2004:
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE
APPOINTMENT
Dr. Malonne Davies, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Sciences, has been elected to serve as the Region 3 College representative for the Kansas Association of Teachers of Science (KATS) for 2004-2007.
Dr. Ken Thompson, associate professor in the Department of Physical Sciences and Director of the Science and Mathematics Education Center, has been elected to serve as the vice president of the Kansas Association of Teachers of Science (KATS) for 2004-2005.
Terri Summey, associate professor, Department of Library Sciences, has been appointed to the Program Advisory Board for the 12th Off-Campus Library Services Conference in 2006.
AWARDS
Dr. Lynnette Sievert, associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and Daphne Jones’, biology undergraduate, won first place in undergraduate posters in the 2004 Research and Creativity Forum. The poster was entitled “Temperature and digestive rate of cornsnakes, Elaphe guttata”
CONFERENCES

Sciences, attended the 51st Annual Meeting of the Southwestern Association
of Naturalists on April 15-17 in San Antonio:
Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, attended the 37th annual meeting of the Southwestern Association of Parasitologists:

The presentation was entitled, “If You Build It, Will They Come?: Creating a Marketing Plan for Distance Learning Library Services.”

Dr. Lynnette Sievert, associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and Daphne Jones, undergraduate, presented, “Temperature and Digestive Rate of Cornsnakes, Elaphe guttata.” Dr. Sievert also presented with Marty Puckett, undergraduate, “Transit Rate, Digestive Efficiency, and Thermoregulation in the Cornsnake, Elaphe guttata.”
Dr. Scott Crupper, associate professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and Jeung-Eun Lee and Havilah Wilcox, undergraduates, presented, “Isolation and Substrate Utilization of Sorangium cellulosum.” Dr. Crupper also presented with Mariko Nishibe, undergraduate, and Jeri Toepfer, graduate student, “A Whole-cell Assay to Determine Soluble Overexpression of MurA in Escherichia coli.” Dr. Crupper and Jeri Toepfer, graduate student, presented, “Cloning and Comparison of the Genes Encoding MurA1 and MurA2 from Bacillus anthracis and Oceanobacillus iheyensis.”
Dr. Leland Sudlow, assistant professor, Department of Biological Sciences, presented, “Hormonal Replacement Therapy Using Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 Slows the Effects of ÿ- Amyloid Toxicity: An Alzheimer’s Treatment Model.”

Dr. Tom Eddy, professor, Department of Biological Sciences, presented the prairie ecology and rangeland management segment to the ESU Elderhostel and also presented a program on prairie ethnobotany at the Prairie Fire Festival in Cottonwood Falls. He also spoke to Tea and Talk on the ESU campus on the topic of edible and medicinal plants of the tallgrass prairie.
