Pedestrian mall revamped

Emporia State University’s pedestrian mall is undergoing changes to improve its visual image and expand its current seating arrangement.

The pedestrian mall begins adjacent from the Union Square behind Plumb Hall and continues to wind its way through the walkway between Science Hall, Cremer Hall and the Morse Complex. Improvements to the pedestrian mall consist of 25-27 new benches and tables that will increase the seating around campus.

“I think their fabulous. I can play chess on the little tables; it reminds me of being in New York at Central Park,” said Chris Noel, senior communication major.

The benches are six feet long and over 250 pounds. They are made from rod iron and steel. Then the benches are covered with synthetic wood boards to avoid weather deterioration.

“The benches provide more area for students to sit around, wait for classes and enjoy the outdoor space,” said Mark Runge, Director of University Facilities.

The benches are part of the ongoing project to improve the pedestrian mall, but are donated to the campus. The idea began with Dr. Diane Bailiff who wanted to purchase a bench and a table for the university in hopes to add more seating on campus for the students. Owen and Virginia Miller donated twelve benches and tables. Another bench and table was donated from the ESU Cookbook Proceeds fund.

There are about a dozen units left that can be donated to the campus. A unit consists of one bench and one table, totaling $1000 a unit. Each donation will be recognized by a plaque on the bench.

“I think they’re fantastic, and a wonderful idea for a gift to the University,” said Runge.
