Benson ready to bring it on

Tara Benson has arrived at ESU to assist the Greek community as the new Coordinator for Greek Life for ESU.

Benson’s duties as Coordinator for Greek Life include serving as the primary advisor for Interfraternity Council (IFC), PanHellenic Association, Greek Week, Rho Lambda, and Order of Omega. Emporia State University has been without the aide of a Greek Life coordinator for the last year when Gwen Hagemen, the previous coordinator, left the position last July.

“I chose Emporia State for several reasons,” said Benson. “The campus community showed such great pride for the university; everyone was very nice and accommodating when I visited. The students were welcoming, and I wanted to be a part of such a strong campus culture.”

Benson received her Master of Science Degree in College Student Personnel at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO. She began her education at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications-Public Relations.

“I hope that students here will use me as a resource in making some positive changes to support the Greek Community,” said Benson. “I think this community holds a lot for many different students looking for a premiere leadership organization while attending college.”

During her time in college, Benson took on opportunities that would prepare her for this position. Before graduating with her Master’s degree she served as the Graduate Assistant for Greek Life at Central Missouri State University. Her role in this position was to advise IFC, the National Pan-hellenic Council, Greek Week, Order of Omega, and Rho Lambda. During her undergraduate years, she was the President of her chapter, Sigma Sigma Simga, PanHellenic President, along with many other positions.

“I think I offer Emporia State a different perspective with all of the experiences I have had,” said Benson. It is always nice to have someone else to offer ideas or to be involved in the community.”

Coming from a Greek background, Benson enjoys the comfort that Greek Life provides.

“I think joining a Greek organization can open many doors for members who take advantage of all the opportunities,” said Benson. “I enjoy knowing every organization has a support group across the nation that has made lifelong commitments to his or her organization, leadership and development opportunities, a strong academic support system, the commitment to serving the community and having fun.”
