Teachers College honors education faculty
Four education faculty members were honored for their achievements in instruction, service, and scholarly activity at a special ceremony Jan. 12.
Recipients were nominated by their respective academic departments and selected by a university-wide committee.
Excellence in instruction
Nancy Smith, associate professor in early childhood and elementary teacher education. Smith’s elementary math courses were noted for high student involvement and effective use of technology.
Excellence in scholarly activity
Dusti D. Howell, associate professor in instructional design and technology. Howell focuses on bringing together technology and brain-based learning research with practical instructional methods.
Kenneth A. Weaver, professor and chair of the department of psychology and special education. Weaver is a nationally recognized and respected leader in psychology education and has particular interest in the training of high school psychology teachers, the effectiveness of distance learning and best practice in assessment.
Excellence in service
Gerry Coffman, professor in the department of early childhood and elementary teacher education. Coffman’s service focuses on meeting the needs of Kansas educators, especially in teaching children to read.
Darrell E. Wood Service Award
Marla Darby, Director of the Teachers College Resource Center. Under Darby’s leadership, the center has been expanded and renovated to better meet the needs students and faculty by providing state-of-the-art instructional materials and supplies. Darby is also an adjunct faculty for the department of psychology and special education.
The awards were presented by Dr. Larry Clark, interim executive director of the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence, and Dr. Frank Mullins, assistant professor and chair of The Teachers College Dean’s Advisory Council.
