ESU students keeping the dream alive

Emporia State University will commemorate the life and legacy of the late civil and human rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 17, 2005 with a day dedicated to his service and memory.

The day will begin with a community service event from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. ESU students will host children from the community and help them make a banner that will be displayed in the ballroom for the celebration. This event will take place in the Memorial Union Heritage Room.

The annual MLK program will feature keynote speaker Robert Page, Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Kansas. Page will be speaking on "Where is Your Legacy? The Dream Lives On". Dessert and coffee will be served at 7:00 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

The program will also include performances by ESU's gospel choir, Harmonious Voices of Praise and a song and dance performance by students from the Project Quest program.

Other events include a poster contest at Emporia High School , where freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to create a poster illustrating a timeline of Dr. King's life. Five winners will be invited to the program and their artwork will be displayed at the banquet.

The ESU Memorial Union Bookstore is giving a $250 textbook scholarship to a senior at Emporia High School who will be attending ESU. Interested students will have to write an essay using a quote from Dr. King that illustrates how they will continue his legacy. The scholarship winner and two runners-up will take part in the celebration as well. The winner will read their essay at the event.

This event is free and open to the public.
