Teachers
offered assistance in meeting the needs of school children
Educators facing the challenge of instructing children
with special needs and who are also non-English speakers will meet
to discuss how to address students’ needs at Emporia State
University in September.
“
Getting It Right: Improving Education for English Language Learners
with Special Education Needs” is for K-12 educators struggling
with problems with English Language Learners who may not be acquiring
English at the rate or in the manner expected. The conference will
be September 9 and 10, 2004 in ESU’s Memorial Union.
Dr. Alba Ortiz, a nationally recognized expert on the education of
linguistically and culturally diverse learners with disabilities,
will speak at the conference.
The audience for the conference includes a wide array of school professionals,
primarily those who sit on the multidisciplinary teams for student
referrals: speech/language pathologists, school counselors, school
psychologists, administrators, school nurses, general education teachers,
ESL teachers, and special education teachers.
The conference is sponsored by the Jones Institute for Educational
Excellence, ESU Department of Foreign Languages, ESU Department of
School Leadership/Middle & Secondary Teacher Education, Project
Best, Project Excellence, and Project Success.
Deadline for registration is August 25, 2004. Educators may register
