Greek Recruitment Offers Opportunities for New Students

Emporia State’s Greek community is gearing up for their annual fall recruitment. For the first time both sororities and fraternities will be hosting a formal recruitment process. In the past recruitment for the fraternities has been done informally and left up to each individual chapter.

The formal recruitment process for the fraternities and sororities will remain separate. Sorority recruitment will take place August 20-22, 2004 and fraternity recruitment will begin August 18th through the 31st.

“Formal recruitment provides both men and women the opportunity to learn about and get to know every chapter, not just one or two,” said Tara Benson, Coordinator for Greek Life.

Formal Sorority recruitment is a time for students, potential members, to spend three days exploring Greek Life.

“I believe it is very important for a woman to take part in Formal Recruitment because it gives her an opportunity to meet many women her own age as well as individuals who have been a student or faculty member at Emporia State before she arrived. It helps each woman with the transition from high school to college life by giving her the chance to become involved on campus right from the start,” said Sarah, PanHellenic Recruitment Chair.

Emporia State’s sororities include, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Chi Omega, and Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Potential members will attend events that will allow them to understand each sorority’s values, community service projects, and learn more about Greek Life in general. Each event is creatively designed through skits and songs in order to enhance each student’s experience. The goal of recruitment is show students at Emporia State what being Greek means and to engage them in new friendships.

In order for students to participate in Sorority recruitment they must fill out an application and return it with a $45 fee to the Center of Student Involvement. The deadline for applications is August 20 at noon. A sorority application can be downloaded from ESU’s website, www.emporia.edu.

Formal Fraternity recruitment begins August 18th at the “Greeks Welcome You” party on Morse Lawn from 4-7pm. Recruitment will then proceed through the 31st with open houses, informational meetings, and luncheons.

“It is important for men to participate in formal recruitment because it allows them to meet 120 plus new guys that they’ve never even seen before. The men will be able to see what it’s like to be apart of the Greek Community here at ESU. You will develop friendships with a diverse group of guys that you will see all around campus and in the classroom,” said Ryan, Interfraternal Council Recruitment Chair.

Fraternities at ESU include, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Pi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Tau Gamma, and Phi Sigma Kappa.

Also, included in the Greek community is Beta Lambda Alpha, a local sorority. They will not be participating with the other sororities in Formal Recruitment, but will hold their own recruitment events early in the semester.
