following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported
to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in March 2004:
AWARDS
Dr. Betsy Yanik, professor in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Sciences, was interviewed about the current status of women in science and mathematics and what is being done to increase female participation in SMET (Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology) by National Public Radio (in New York) for inclusion in the programs of two series, To The Best of Our Knowledge and 51 Percent. In addition, Yanik was nominated for a Presidential Award for Mentoring in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology.
Dr. Jorge Ballester, associate professor in the Department of Physical Sciences, and Dr. Chuck Pheatt, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science, visited with R. Hale, KU Engineering professor and PI on a NASA-Epscore grant. Ballester and Pheatt, in 2003, were awarded a subcontract on the NASA-Epscore land-based telescope composite material development project. Based on work completed to date by Ballester and Pheatt, Hale has included these ESU faculty on an extension to the initial grant. Funds should be awarded in 2004. Ballester and Pheatt are planning several presentations in the region on the activities related to this project.
