Pi Eta inducts 12

The Xi Sigma chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the official National Communication Honor Society of the National Communication Association has inducted 12 new members. Pi Eta recognizes, fosters and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies. Inductees include: Lindsay Michele Addington, Olathe; Ben Bartlett, Mission; Dusty Buell, Augusta; Erin Nicole Heim, Topeka; Lawrence A. Professor Myrna Cornett-DeVito was given the Xi Phi Outstanding Faculty Award last week. Xi Phi is an Honorary Leadership Fraternity whose membership consists of ESU student leaders. Every year, the group recognizes a faculty member for exemplary service to the university. Cornett-DeVito has taught communication at ESU since 1986. She was instrumental in forming a local chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication honor society. In 2002, she received ESU’s “Leadership in Diversity” award.

The president and CEO of Capitol Federal Savings Bank John Dicus will be the guest speaker at the ESU School of Business Honors Banquet Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Colonial Ballroom. Dicus started as a bank officer at Capitol Federal in 1985 and has worked his way up through the ranks to his 2003 CEO appointment. Dicus is a member of the ESU School of Business Advisory Council. The annual honors banquet recognizes graduating seniors with a 3.5 grade point average or better. The school also presents student and faculty awards and scholarships at the event. Beta Lambda Alpha, a local sorority at ESU, gained associate membership with the Pan-Hellenic Association at an April 7 installation. The Pan-Hellenic Association works with ESU’s sororities to maintain positive relationships between each chapter, and within the campus and community. “PHA is very excited and enthusiastic that the Greek community has expanded and we cannot wait to see what new ideas Beta Lambda Alpha will bring,” said PHA president Carmen Patterson. Beta Lambda Alpha will now be a voting member of PHA. The group is working to team up with a nationally recognized sorority and will take part in future formal recruitment programs at ESU.

Roundtable screens German documentary
April 8, 2004 | The ESU World War II Roundtable will present “Triumph of the Will,” a documentary of the September 1934 Nazi Party rally at Nuremberg. The film was personally commissioned by Adolf Hitler and was directed by Leni Reifenstahl. The film is considered one of the finest examples of propaganda, introducing the Nazi movement to its future enemies. The two-hour film will be shown Wednesday, April 14 at 3 p.m. in Plumb Hall Room 408. A short discussion led by Professors Christopher Lovett and Loren Pennington will follow. The program is sponsored by the Department of Social Sciences, the Pi Gamma Mu Social Sciences Honor Society and the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society.

NCAA-accredited nutritionist Deanna Latson will use audience interaction, stories, humor and multi-media to show people how to boost their personal energy. Topics in her presentation will include: increased endurance, mental focus, weight loss and avoiding illness. The program will take place April 14 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Kanza Room.
Lecturer celebrates woman geographers

The ESU Department of Social Sciences will host an expert on women and geography for its annual John J. Zimmerman Annual Memorial Lecture. Executive Director Janice J. Monk of the University of Arizona’s Southwest Institute for Research on Women will give a talk titled “The Normal Way: A Celebration of Early Women Geographers.” Monk is the co-editor and co-author of eight books and many book chapters on women’s studies, geography and higher education. The lecture will take place April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Flint Hills Room.
Art forum to host collage artist

Collage artist Fred Cray will be the guest of the Department of Art’s art forum April 21 at 3 p.m. in Science Hall Room 72. Reviewer Michael Weinstein described a Cray exhibit as “ambitious photo-collages arranged in grids of quadruple exposures of tourist shots from cities around the world (which) strike the eye with sparkling compound density.” Cray has shown in galleries in Europe and throughout the Northeast. He is the nephew of retired ESU music faculty member Elaine Edwards.

graduate to lead Children's Village
April 1, 2004 | ESU alumnus Jeremy C. Kohomban has been named the president and chief executive officer of one of the nation’s most highly regarded child welfare agencies. The Children’s Village serves more than 1,000 children and their families in residential programs and more than 10,000 children in community programs in New York each year. Kohomban received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from ESU in 1989. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology and is pursuing a doctorate in organizational leadership. The son of medical missionaries in Sri Lanka, Kohomban grew up with a love for children and a passion to fight racism and the devastating effects of the poverty on children and families. ESU honored Kohomban with the Outstanding Recent Graduate award in 2000.

The Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society, Zeta Chapter, of Emporia State University will be inducting 24 new members at its annual initiation April 5 at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Kanza Room. This year’s theme is “Education, Then, Now and the Future,” with keynote speaker Donna Shank of the Kansas Board of Regents.
