ROUNDTABLE
The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in September 2003:
PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Marshall Sundberg, chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, and Tom Bultman, from Hope College, led a panel session entitled, “Running NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Programs” during the Botany Education Forum on July 25-26 in Mobile, Alabama. During the subsequent Botany 2003 meeting on July 26-31, Sundberg co-organized a symposium on “Methods and Myths about Conducting Research in Botany Education” with Dr. James Wandersee, from Louisiana State University. In addition to Sundberg and Wandersee, other speakers were Gordon Uno (University of Oklahoma and American Institute of Biological Sciences), Randy Moore (University of Minnesota and National Association of Biology Teachers), and Joseph Novak (Cornell University and University of West Florida).
Dr. Tom Eddy, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, presented programs on prairie plants to visitors at the Maxwell Game Refuge during their annual Prairie Days. He also taught prairie history, ecology and ethnobotany in the Prairie School of the American Institute for Floral Designers in St. Louis.
Greg Sievert, instructor in the Department of Biological Sciences, presented a 2 projector slide show to the Emporia Gardeners of America on butterfly gardening in Kansas. He also showed examples of the life cycles of many of our local butterflies and moths. Drs. Sandy and David Saunders, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, hosted his presentation.
Dr. David Kaplan, Professor and Chair of the Department of Counselor Education and Rehabilitation Programs, presented, “Family Counseling in a College or University Setting” at the joint Kansas College Counseling Association/Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers in Emporia on September 25.
Dr. John Sacher, Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Social Sciences presented a paper entitled, “Everything is in Trouble Here:” Confederate Conscription in Louisiana at the 25th Annual Mid-America Conference on History in Memphis, September 18-20. This paper is part of a larger work that he is pursuing on the intersection of social, political, and military history in the Confederacy
PUBLICATIONS
Dr. Kalyan Chakraborty, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting and CIS, and Dean Edmiston, associate professor in the Department of Accounting and CIS, published “Economic Impact of University and Financial Consequences of University Budget Cuts on the Local and State Economy,” in the Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Economics, Vol. 4 (2003).
