Jones Distinguished Lecture announced
A leader in business, education reform, and workforce trends will give two presentations Monday Oct. 13 at Emporia State University.
Roberts T. Jones, a lifelong advocate for investing
in people, is this year’s Jones
Distinguished Lecturer, sponsored by ESU’s Jones Institute for
Educational Excellence.
“Due to his extensive work with business and
labor, this lecture will be for business
people as well as educators,” said Jones Institute special projects
director Lucie Eusey. “Mr. Jones’ leadership and vision
at the national level have enabled him to be engaged in every major
piece of education and training legislation for the past 40 years.”
Jones – not related to the founders of the Jones Institute - brings a unique perspective on the public policy trends impacting our nation’s education and business training systems.
He is widely credited with helping place workforce development at the forefront of the nation’s public policy agenda, having served as the President and CEO of the National Alliance of Business, the Assistant Secretary of Labor under former Presidents Reagan and Bush, senior positions in two major U.S. corporations, and as Chief of Staff to two U.S. congressmen.
As Assistant Secretary of Labor, Jones initiated the widely recognized SCANS report which for the first time spelled out employer expectations for success in the workplace.
Jones has led the business community in supporting “standards-driven” education
reform, introducing national initiatives in support of teaching, and
producing analysis of national and international economic, education
and workforce trends. Over the course of both presentations he will
share what he perceives as current trends, issues, and controversies
in education and training policy from grassroots to the federal government
levels.
He is currently President of Education and Workforce Policy, LLC, a Washington D.C. consulting firm.
His Oct. 13 sessions will include a seminar from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in
the Jones
Conference Center, Visser Hall 330; and a lecture from 11:45 a.m.-12:30
p.m. at
Butcher-Boertman Hall in the Sauder Alumni Center.
A complimentary luncheon for lecture attendees will be held from 12:30-1:15
p.m at the Sauder Alumni Center. A reservation is required and must
be made by 5 p.m.
Wednesday, October 8 by calling the Jones Institute at 620-341-5372
or by e-mailing Lucie Eusey at euseyluc@emporia.edu.
The Jones Distinguished
Lecture is sponsored by The Teachers College and Jones
Institute for Educational Excellence.
