Decker
receives national award
Oct. 30, 2003 | Mary Decker, a graduate assistant for the Union Activities Council, won the “Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award” at the recent National Association for Campus Activities Central Regional Conference in Little Rock. Ark. Decker is active in working with student organization committees, planning workshops and assisting student groups to prepare special events. The NACA is the nation’s largest collegiate organization for campus activities with nearly 1,100 member colleges. Its mission is to link the higher education and entertainment communities in a business and learning partnership.
Reeves named “Educator of the Year”
Oct. 30, 2003 | The Kansas Speech Communication Association has named ESU instructor Kenna Reeves its collegiate-level “Educator of the Year.” An organizational press release cited Reeves for her “consistently high student evaluations, her commitment to teachers education and her involvement in professional organizations.” Reeves has been recognized as an outstanding faculty member by the ESU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and several student honor societies. She has also been honored for outstanding service to the ESU Upward Bound program.
Award-winning writer to appear
Oct. 30, 2003 | Award-winning author Ron Carlson will read from his recent work Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Anderson Memorial Library at C. of E. Drive. Carlson has won the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction and the Ploughshares Cohen Prize. Two of his books were named one of the best of the year by the New York Times. His fiction has appeared in Esquire, Harper’s, Gentleman’s Quarterly, Story and dozens of other journals and anthologies. Carlson is a professor of English at Arizona State University. His two most recent works are a young adult novel called “The Speed of Light” and the story collection “A Kind of Flying.”
TV comedian Kivi Rogers slated
Oct. 30, 2003 | A popular campus comedian and TV guest star will entertain the Memorial Union Hornet’s Nest crowd Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Kivi Rogers was named the 1998 “Comedian of the Year” by the National Association of Campus Activities. He was showcased on the HBO Aspen Comedy Festival and has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He also has numerous guest starring credits that include “The West Wing,” “Dharma and Greg,” “Everybody Loves Raymond” and "Diagnosis Murder."
Madrigal Feast open for reservations
Oct. 30, 2003 | The ESU A Cappella Choir has started taking reservations for its ninth annual Renaissance Madrigal Feast, featuring madrigal music, period costumes and a five-course dinner. “We’re going to welcome in the coming Christmas season in Elizabethan style,” said director Terry Barham. The event will be held November 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Colonial Ballroom. Tickets are $28 a person, or $200 for a block of eight tickets. Proceeds will support choral scholarships. Reservations are due November 13. For more information, contact the ESU Music Department at 341-5432.
Ten named to Who's Who

Ten ESU students will be listed this year with Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, an honorary organization that recognizes outstanding student leadership and academic achievement at the collegiate level. Each year at ESU, Xi Phi Honorary Leadership Fraternity sponsors the selection of the Who’s Who recipients. Honorees include: Maira Aguirre, Emporia; Cara Christianson, Leavenworth; Sarah Dent, Overland Park; Krystal Littrell, Olathe; Natalie Moreau, Baldwin City; Shelly Minge, Hanover; Sarah Phillips, Edgerton; Heidi Schlesener, Emporia; Sarah Schul, Garden City; and Molly Young, communication, Wichita.
French Film Festival continues

| The latest installment in the ESU Tournées French Film Festival blurs the line between reality and fiction. Yvan Attal’s “Ma femme est une actrice” (“My Wife is an Actress”). Attal stars as a sports reporter, married to his real life spouse, actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, playing a broad caricature of herself. Attal becomes jealous when Gainsbourg befriends her current film’s costar, played by Terence Stamp. The film will be shown Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Science Hall Room 72. Admission is $2, or free for ESU students. The film festival is sponsored by the ESU French Club and Pi Delta Phi, with support from the French Embassy and French Ministry of Culture.
