Bardan wins masters thesis award
A former ESU student from Romania is this year’s recipient of Laurence C. Boylan Award for the best masters thesis during the 2002-03 academic year.
Alice Bardan was recognized for her theses “Communist Rhetorics and Reception in Black Bohemian Writers: The Case of Hughs, McKay and Nugent.” Her thesis advisor was English professor Gary Holcomb. After receiving her M.A. in August 2003, Bardan entered the Ph.D. program at the University of Southern California.
While at ESU, Bardan was awarded an Academic Achievement Award, a department scholarship and, for two years in a row, the Charles E. Walton Outstanding Graduate Essay Award. She was only the second graduate student to win the Walton award.
The Laurence C. Boylan Award was created by a special fund drive to honor Boylan, creator of the graduate program and dean of graduate studies from 1958-66. The Boylan fund provides awards for distinguished scholarship in graduate study by honoring the best masters thesis each year and providing two special scholarships for outstanding ESU graduate students.
Bardan will receive an award of $250, her name will be added to a plaque on display in the Office of Graduate Studies and she will be recognized during the university research forum this spring.
