Amphion chorus takes show on the road

The Amphion men’s chorus is gearing up for a series of concerts outside Emporia, ending the semester with a performance in the prestigious Country Club United Methodist Church Concert Series in Kansas City.

Amphion’s winter program includes traditional and contemporary choral music, as well as spirituals and popular Christmas tunes. “Audiences can expect to see a fun presentation of seasonal music,” said director and founder Ken Prewitt.

"There's a vitality and robust nature to the sound that's very appealing — and the fact that there can be this wonderfully athletic masculine sound, and yet be filled with moments of tenderness," he said.

The group will first appear December 3 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the inaugural concert of the Osage City High School Fine Arts Series. Amphion will perform December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Didde Catholic Campus Center in Emporia. On December 6 at 7:30 p.m., the group will appear at the Madison High School Concert and Lecture Series.

The Kansas City concert will be December 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Country Club United Methodist Church at 57th and Wornall Road.

Prewitt is a native of Detroit, Mich. where he began his vocal studies at the Royal Oak Conservatory of Music under the teaching of the distinguished tenor, Joseph Muzzolini. An active recitalist and oratorio singer, Prewitt finished his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of South Carolina. Prewitt teaches voice, lyric diction and vocal pedagogy.

Amphion is named for one of the sons of Zeus, legendary for a gift for music such that he could change nature. In Greek mythology Amphion, charmed the stones around Thebes to form the city's walls, through the melodious sound of his magic lyre.
