ROUNDTABLE

The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in April and May 2003:

AWARDS

Sukhminder Singh, graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences, won the student poster award at the ESU Research and Creativity Forum on April 10, 2003, for his poster “Amplification of the Epothilone Methyl Transferase Domain from Sorangium cellulosum”and will receive $300 for professional travel. Singh also won the 1st place prize for best Graduate Poster Presentation, “Progress Toward the Development of a PCR-Based Approach for the Identification of the Epothilone Gene” at the Kansas Academy of Sciences meeting on April 11 and 12 held at Pittsburg State University.

The following faculty members were recognized at the 2003 Service Awards Ceremony held on April 15, 2003 for their years of service to the State of Kansas and Emporia State University:

  • Dr. David Saunders, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, 10 years;

  • Dr. Rodney Sobieski, interim dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences, 30 years;

  • Dr. Tom Eddy, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, 40 years.

  • Roger Ferguson, Lab Education Technician in the Department of Biological Sciences, was named the Outstanding Classified Employee of the Year.

CONFERENCES

The Southwestern Association of Parasitologists was attended by Johnathon Campbell and Phil Satterfield, graduate students and Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences.

PRESENTATIONS

The following presentations were given by the Department of Biological Sciences at the ESU Research and Creativity Forum on April 10, 2003:

  • Samer Abu Bakr, gradaute student, and Dr. Scott Crupper, assistant professor: “High-level Cadmium Resistance in Staphylococcus sciuri.” Also presented at the Kansas Academy of Sciences, April 11-12, 2003.

  • Dr. David Saunders, associate professor, Dr. Ronald Keith, associate professor in the Department of Physical Sciences and Dr. Elizabeth Yanik, professor in the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics: “Introduction of Digital Imaging Technology into the High School and Junior High School Classrooms for Inquiry-Based Learning.” Also presented at the Kansas Academy of Sciences.

  • Inder Mohan Singh, graduate student, and Dr. Scott Crupper, assistant professor: “Cloning and Overexpression of EPSP Synthase and Mura from Staphylococcus aureus”

  • Sukhminder Singh, graduate student, and Dr. Scott Crupper, assistant professor: “Amplification of the Epothilone Methyl Transferase Domain from Sorangium cellulosum”

  • Dr. David Saunders, associate professor, Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor, and Dr. Gary Wyatt, associate professor: “The Academic Climate of ESU: Faculty and Student Perceptions”

  • Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor: “Nestedness in Colonization-Dominated Systems: Helminth Infracommunities of Rana vaillanti Brocchi (Anura: Ranidae) in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico”

The following presentations were given by the Department of Biological Sciences at the Kansas Academy of Sciences meeting at Pittsburg State University on April 11 & 12, 2003:

  • Inder Mohan Singh, graduate student, and Dr. Scott Crupper, assistant professor: “The Enolpyruvyltransferases (EPSP Synthase and Mura) as Novel Antimicrobil Targets”

  • John Ewing, graduate student, and Dr. David Saunders, associate professor: “Resistance to Lysing of Erythrocytes in Cold-Adapted Bullfrogs (Rana Catesbeiana)”

  • Chanda Regier, graduate student, and Dr. Dwight Moore, associate professor: “Effects of Grassland Management on Butterfly Abundance and Species Diversity in East Central Kansas.” Also presented at the Southwestern Association of Naturalists April 17-19, 2003.

  • Myoung-Gwi Ryou, graduate student, and Dr. David Saunders, associate professor: “The Role of Blood Viscosity in the Regulation of Hematocrit in Tail-Suspended Rats (Rattus Norvegicus) Treated with Pentoxifylline”

  • Sukhminder Singh, graduate student, and Dr. Scott Crupper, assistant professor: “Progress Toward the Development of a PCR-Based Approach for the Identification of the Epothilone Gene”

The following presentations were given by the Department of Biological Sciences at the Southwestern Association of Naturalists in Norman, Oklahoma on April 17-19, 2003:

  • Dave Gillette, Jeremy Tiemann (former graduate students), Dr. David Edds, professor, and Mark Wildhaber: “Spatiotemporal patterns of fish assemblage structure in a river impounded by lowhead dams: temporal variation and the Serial Discontinuity Concept”

  • Stephanie Sherraden, former graduate student, and Dr. David Edds, professor: Mussel assemblages in a developing oxbow and a newly-cut channel of the Neosho River, Kansas”

  • Dave Gillette, Jeremy Tiemann (former graduate students), Dr. David Edds, professor, and Mark Wildhaber: “Effects of lowhead dams on fish assemblages in the Neosho River, Kansas with emphasis on the Neosho madtom, Noturus placidus, a federally-listed threatened species”

PUBLICATIONS

Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, presented “Nestedness in Colonization-Dominated Systems: Helminth Infracommunities of Rana vaillanti Brocchi (Anura: Ranidae) in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico” at the Southwestern Association of Parasitologists.

Dr. S. Prasad Kantamneni, associate professor, and Dr. Kevin R. Coulson, assistant professor in the Department of Business Administration and Education, and Punya Upadhyaya, former School of Business faculty member, published "Role of Local Governments in Globalization,” in the Journal of Practical Global Business, Vol. II, 2003, pp. 94 - 122.

Dr. Rebekah Sheely, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting & Computer Information Systems, published "A Position in Corporate Accounting Offers Many of the Advantages that were Once Unique to Public Accounting," in New Accountant, Issue #701, 2003, pp.13 - 16.

Dr. Donald Miller, professor in the Department of Business Administration and Education and James Wenger, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting and Computer Information Systems, published "A Survey of Internet Usage in Fortune 500 Firms," in International Business Schools Computing Quarterly, Vol. 11, No. 1 (Winter 2003), pp. 28 - 35.
