WWII Roundtable features three speakers

The March 27 meeting of the ESU World War II Roundtable will feature presentations from two veterans and a veteran's wife. "A Green Country Boy Goes to War," is the title of a talk by Captain Bill Seitz, who served in North Africa and Italy in the 15th U.S. Army Air Corps. Pacific theater veteran Don Coldsmith will speak on the topic of "From the Old Army to the New Mulepack Artillery to General Hideki Tojo." Themla Loomis Crawford will present "Forgotten War: The China-Burma-India Theater." Her first husband, the late William Loomis, served with the 14th Army Air Corps in China and Burma. The World War II Roundtable will be held Thursday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. in 408 Plumb Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

Kjersti Ehrie and Rebecca James will receive the Laurence C. Boylan award for 2003-04. The award was created in honor of the university's first graduate dean, who served from 1958-66. Both students will be honored at the Research and Creativity Forum April 10. They will each receive a cash stipend of $2,300 and have their names added to the plaque on display at the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. Ehrie is working on her master's of business administration and James is working on her master's of arts in English.
Student comedians invited to perform

The Wacky Wooster's Comedy Contest will put student stand-up skills on stage March 26, 7 p.m. at the Memorial Union Hornet's Nest. Prizes will be awarded to the top three 15-minute performances.
Small business seminar planned

The Small Business Development Center will hold an April 3 workshop titled "Legal Forms of Ownership for Small Businesses." Ken Schallenkamp will present the advantages and disadvantages of different types of ownership, including sole proprietorships, general partnerships, limited partnerships, limited liability partnerships, corporations and limited liability companies. The three-hour workshop will be held Thursday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Glennen Board Room of the National Teachers Hall of Fame. Registration is $20. Chemical society to meet at ESU

The American Chemical Society will hold monthly Wichita Section meeting at ESU April 8. Arizona State University chemistry professor Carleton Moore will talk about how chemists have learned about the composition of the earth and other planets through the study of meteorites. The meeting will follow a 6 p.m. dinner in the Skyline Room of the ESU Memorial Union. The organization's annual awards will also be presented that evening, including fifty-year membership awards.
Graduate students awarded

Five graduate students will receive the ESU Academic Achievement Award for 2003-04: Alina Ababei, English; Mindy Baker, mathematics, computer science and economics; Leah Childers, mathematics, computer science and economics; Ruxandra Radulesca, English; and Agnieszka Tuszynska, English. Sponsored by the Office of the President, these awards were created to encourage advanced study, research and creative activities. Recipients will pursue a worthwhile research project or perform a useful academic service. In addition to receiving a graduate assistantship in their major department, award winners will also receive a stipend of $1474.
XBRL Team earns national honors

A team from the ESU School of Business received an honorable mention in the third annual XBRL International Academic Competition. XBRL is short for extensible Business Reporting Language, an open standard for communicating financial data being developed by over 170 companies and agencies. The ESU team submitted a web page designed as a translation tool between the United States Financial Accounting Standards and International Accounting Standards. Team members were Melissa Reynolds, Rebecca Chapman, Angela Teter, Bob Reeves and Jeremy Luby - with faculty advisors Zane Swanson, Nithim Hindi, William Remington and Adam Benson. The team that won the competition was from the National University of Rosario in Argentina.
Davis honored for service

The Kansas Association of School Librarians has chosen William Allen White Library director Joyce Davis for its 2003 Distinguished Service Award. KASL recognizes legislators, school administrators or community leaders who have made an important contribution to school library media services. Joyce was selected for her work as coordinator of the William Allen White Children's Book Award and its 50th anniversary celebration in October 2002.
Alumnus named top accountant

Craig Kuckelman, a 1991 graduate of the ESU School of Business, will lead the tax office of Deloitte and Touche in Kansas City. Since Kuckelman joined the firm in 1991, he has provided tax services to clients in a variety of industries, including retail, manufacturing, software, transportation and energy. Kuckelman serves on the ESU School of Business Advisory Council and the school's Accounting Advisory Council. Deloitte and Touche is one of the nation's leading professional services firms, employing 30,000 in more than 100 U.S. cities.
