Four to lead music and theater workshops in Costa Rica
Four ESU students and teachers will give a series of music and theater performances and workshops to college students in Costa Rica August 3-10.
ESU associate professors Theresa Mitchell from the communications and theatre department and Pennie Speedie from the music department perform with students Jason Sickel and Kelley Davis. They will present a program of short plays and musical numbers at two universities in the capital city of San José. They will also be teaching short courses in acting, dance and singing.
According to Jim Harter, ESU's assistant vice president for international education, the workshops were arranged after he visited officials at the Centro Cultural Costarricense-Norteamericano last April.
"I was invited to their performing arts series, and suggested that they might consider Emporia State. I told them we could provide them with excellent music, or theater or a combination. They were extremely interested and immediately pursued it," said Harter.
The cultural center is a non-profit organization offering English/Spanish language courses and educational advising services. The center features an international art gallery, a theater that hosts music, drama, film, and dance performances, and Costa Rica's largest collection of English-language books and magazines, videos, CD-ROMs and on-line databases.
