ROUNDTABLE

The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishment reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in February and March 2003:

Awards

David Gillette, graduate student in the Department of Biological Science, has been selected to receive the Laurence C. Boylan Award for the outstanding master's thesis for 2001-2002. Gillette's thesis, "Spatio-temporal patterns of fish assemblage structure and habitat use on gravel bars in the Neosho River, Lyon County, Kansas" was completed under the direction of Dr. David Edds, professor in the Department of Biological Science.

The following faculty members in the Department of Biological Science received Faculty Research and Creativity Awards:

  • Dr. Tim Burnett, assistant professor, "Generation of Clonal Cell Lines from Uterine Natural Killer Cells" $10,750

  • Dr. David Edds, professor, "Biodiversity of Fishes in Nepal" $4020

  • Dr. David Saunders, associate professor, "Investigation of the Ability of Blood to Clot in Cold Exposed (hypothermic) American Bullfrogs" $6750

  • Dr. Gregory Smith, assistant professor, "Historic Patterns in Small Mammal Community Structure at the Ross Natural History Reservation" $13,233

  • Dr. Lee Sudlow, assistant professor, "Combinatorial Hormone Therapy Improves Cell Survival Against the Toxicity of Beta-Amyloid of Alzheimer's Disease" $10,706

  • Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor, "Prerequisites for Parasitism in the Rhabditid Nematodes" $7650.

Elizabeth Warburton, graduate student in biology, has been approved for a $300 grant from Sigma Xi Committee on Grants-in-Aid of Research in support of her research project "Prerequisites for parasitism in order Rhabditida (Nematoda)." She is working with Dr. Derek Zelmer, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Science.

Dr. Ed Kurtz, chairman of the Department of Biological Science from 1968 to 1972, was recently recognized by the National Wildlife Federation for 35 years as the "one scientist who has checked every single work in the magazine [Ranger Rick]."

Greg Sievert, instructor in the Department of Biological Science, was appointed 2003 president of the Kansas Herpetological Society. Eric Kessler, MS 1998, was appointed treasurer.

Presentations

Dr. David Saunders, associate professor in the Department of Biological Science, and Christy Terry, undergraduate student, presented the following paper at the first annual K-BRIN Student Symposium at KU Medical Center in Kansas City on January 11-12, 2003: "Age effects on erythrocyte morphological and biochemical properties associate with storage."

At the Kansas Herpetological Society meeting in Lawrence, Dr. Lynette Sievert, associate professor in the Department of Biological Science, and Angie Babbit, graduate student in biology, presented the paper entitled "Digestive Efficiency of Cope's Gray Treefrog, Hyla chrysoscelis."

Also, Dr. Lynette Sievert and Dr. Derrick Zelmer, associate professors in the Department of Biological Science, and Brandon Chance, MS 2002, presented the paper entitled "A Telemetric Study of Winter Microhabitat Selection by the Bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, in East-central Kansas."

Publications

Dr. David Kaplan, Chair of the Department of Counselor Education and Rehabilitation Programs, and Associates have written the book "Family Counseling for All Counselors" Co-published by ERIC/CASS and the American Counseling Association, The book includes chapters by Dr. Dennis Pelsma, Associate Professor in the Department of Counselor Education and Rehabilitation Programs and Dr. Fran Steigerwald, former Assistant Professor in CERP.

Dr. Raffaele DeVito, professor in the Department of Business Administration and Education, Leon B. Crosby, Grand Valley State University, and J. Michael Pearson, Southern Illinois University, published "Manage Your Customers' Perception of Quality" in the Review of Business, Vol. 24, No. 1, Winter 2003, pp 18 - 24.

Dr. S. Prasad Kantamneni and Dr. Kevin R. Coulson, associate and assistant professor, respectively, in the Department of Business Administration and Education, and Dr. Punya Upadhyaya, formerly of the ESU School of Business, published "Role of Local Governments in Globalization," in the Journal of Practical Global Business, Vol. 11, 2003, pp. 94 - 122.

Dr. David Edds, professor in the Department of Biological Science, and former graduate student, David Gillette, had "Hot-Soda Process Paper Mill Effluent Effects on Fishes and Macroinvertebrates in the Narayani River, Nepal" published in the Journal of Freshwater Ecology.

Dr. David Kaplan, chairman of the Department of Counselor Education and Rehabilitation Programs, and Melody Cole, a graduate student, co-authored an ERIC Digest (Educational Resources Information Center) titled, "Incorporating Family Work into Individual Counseling: Establishing a Relationship with Families."

Conferences

Elaine Edwards, professor emeritus in the Department of Music, was a guest clinician at the HASTA (Heart of the American Suzuki Teachers Association) on Feb 8th at the Music and Arts Institute in Independence, Missouri. Other clinicians included Christine Burczyk, assistant professor of music at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and Dr. James Breckenridge, professor of music at Southwestern University in Oklahoma.

Dr. Lynette Sievert and Greg Sievert, associate professor and instructor, respectively, in the Department of Biological Science, along with graduate students Angie Babbit, Brandon Chance, Megan Kearney, and Stephanie Sherraden, attended the 29th annual Kansas Herpetological Society meeting Nov.1-3 in Lawrence, Kansas.
