THIRD THURSDAY UPDATE #18 ~ 11/17/2011November 17, 2011
Work continues on the Terrace Level beneath the Hornets Nest resident dining room. Before the end of the semester Towers Complex students will be able to enter from lakeside, pass along a corridor lounge, and use the new stair tower or elevator to access West Lobby. Graduating seniors and students ending their study abroad experience here at ESU will be able to see another dramatic element of our renovation come on line. Carpet for the lower level is being installed this week.
Please Note: Tomorrow (Friday) at 2 p.m. a tempered glass canopy will be installed over the east atrium entrance. The entrance will be closed to the public for around an hour. Next Monday tile work will affect the east end of the construction passage through Main Street. I expect this passage to remain open but narrower as tile is set.
The top floor of the 1925 original building is nearing completion for Student Publications and the ASG Senate use next semester. Painting is in progress. Fire suppression is in place. Plumbing fixtures are going in and water will be available to this level very soon.
Demolition is now 98% complete. Yet this November the eleven new windows cut in the west side of the Union overlooking Union Square will be glazed. Electrical and mechanical systems are being roughed in on the west side, second floor. The KSTC Colonial Ballroom is beginning to transform with connectivity to adjacent meeting spaces through future French doors.
The first floor Main Street and Center for Student Involvement office suite are on schedule for a second semester opening. Concrete was poured Tuesday for the ADA ramp connecting the flat floor with the mezzanine. The student and staff offices will receive drywall very soon.
The new Hornets Nest and production kitchen layout will enable innovation. Chef Johnny is planning surprises and special offerings in the near future. You may follow ESU Dining on Facebook. Additional mosaic tile has been received to complete the finish of the pizza oven.
The Memorial Union is in its 17th month of renovation. In all that time no injury or accident has occurred on our project. Ferrell Construction of Topeka continues its outstanding safety record as general contractor on our project. For this we are thankful.
Enjoy family and friends this Thanksgiving. Go Hornets!
