Emporia State University planning memorial service

October 24, 2011

Plans are under way for a memorial service for two Emporia State University students from China who were killed Thursday morning, Oct. 20, 2011, in an apartment fire.

Both Yawei Fan and Zheng Lin were from Liaoning province in China and came to ESU for the Fall 2009 semester.

Fan was a sophomore studying chemistry.

Lin was studying for her master’s degree in the Department of English, Modern Languages and Journalism. She worked at the Center for Early Childhood on campus.

“They were good students and very nice people,” said Dr. Eric Yang, assistant professor of biological sciences at ESU.

Yang has worked with Liaoning Normal University, the students’ home institution and an ESU partner institution.

“Every year, I went to the home institution in Dalian,” Yang said. “I met them there.”
