THIRD THURSDAY UPDATE #17 ~ 10/20/2011October 20, 2011
Now that Homecoming 2011 is history, I want to report that our alumni are happy with and enthusiastic about the changes that have been made. Many toured behind the scenes Saturday morning during the Kaffe Klatch which hundreds attended. Webb Hall facilitated numerous homecoming/reunion meals. Andrea Kiser of San Antonio, TX, who was both ASG senator and on UAC in the late 70s into the early 80s, attended homecoming last weekend and sent this message: “I visited the Memorial Union and love the new renovations...it looks great so far and can't wait to see it when it's complete!”
A new video tour premiered at homecoming featuring student body V.P. Jennifer Cheray and Chef Johnny. Here is that link.
Currently, Week #66
Landscaping on the east front outside the atrium is underway. Limestone blocks from southern Lyon County are being installed. Plantings will be completed in the spring. Drywall installation on Main Street is underway. Fire suppression installation on the top floor of the 1925 building is in progress. Demolition of the whole project is 90% complete, and as reported earlier, 75% has been recycled. New windows on the second level overlooking Union Square have been cut through.
Very Soon/Coming Up
Floor tile installation is expected to begin on Main Street around November 1st. The stair connecting the lower Terrace Level with the West Lobby and Hornets Nest is expected to open after Thanksgiving. The walnut staircase in the original building will be refinished and small patches of asbestos are yet to be abated. The Office of International Education is gearing-up for a permanent move back into the building in new offices in December. Career Services is planning to be our new neighbors, moving in mid January. The whole renovation is due to be completed in May of 2012. I see light at the end of the renovation tunnel!
