Fire safety topic of workshop for Emporia State students

September 21, 2012

Fire safety is the topic of a workshop for Emporia State University students sponsored by the Emporia Fire Department and Emporia State’s Office of International Education and Office of Student Affairs.

The Fan-Lin Fire Prevention Workshop will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, in Webb Hall of the Memorial Union. The event is named in memory of Zheng Lin and Yawei Fan, two Emporia State students who died in an October 2011 apartment fire. Investigators determined the fire started when combustible items blocking a floor furnace grate ignited.

During the workshop, members of the fire department will provide information on fire safety and planning escape routes from apartments, homes or residence halls as well as demonstrate how to use safety equipment. The workshop will include a question-and-answer session to address specific questions and concerns.
