Events for Kansas educators offered

Educators are being offered opportunities to increase their skill and knowledge through workshops provided this fall. The following events are offered through Emporia State University’s Jones Institute for Educational Excellence. • October 5 & November 16 – Building & Maintaining Classroom Learning Communities – for Elementary Classroom Teachers, Grades 2-12. Strategies to support collaborative and cooperative learning will be demonstrated. Presenters: Harvey C. Foyle, Allyson L. Lyman, and Larry Lyman.

• October 10 – Differentiation Strategies for Teachers…with more than one student in their classroom! – for K–12 Classroom Teachers. Participants in this workshop will examine the what, why, and how of differentiation, have specific strategies for differentiating content reading and critical thinking activities modeled, and leave with strategies for differentiating instruction to use with their next lesson. Presenter: Carol Hailey

• November 7 – Strategies for Using Writer’s Notebooks for Teaching Six-Trait Writing – for Grades 4-12 Classroom Teachers. This workshop will provide teachers with ideas for using a Writing Notebook as a tool for practicing writing and developing “writing fluency” through the Six Traits. Presenter: Carol Hailey

• November 18 – Phonological Awareness in the Early Grades Using Road to the Code® – for Kindergarten and First Grade Classroom Teachers, Special Education, Title I, Interventionists, & Coaches. Participants will leave this training ready to implement this intervention program in their classrooms the next day. Participants will be provided with a total program, including materials and a copy of Road to the Code. Presenter: Sharon Bechtel

• December 2 – Grading for Learning: Aligning Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, and Grading & Reporting – for Middle & High School Teachers and Administrators. Using the work of current researchers, workshop participants will examine and reflect on their current grading practices, identify any areas in which their grades may be “broken,” and consider possible “fixes” that will promote grading for learning and student achievement. Presenters: Carol Hailey
